I've tried leek in my grow bag last year and it was complete disaster. But I love leeks. And also when I planted them I had no idea they are in ground for so long. lol.
Can I sow them now in yoghurt pot, 1 in each and leave them there for while until they get proper going? And then plant them out?
Cucumbers... can I sow them on the windowsil now, again in little pots and sow them out beginning of april, or should I wait longer?
My garden still need sorting out (OH promised to prepare for me little patio veg garden).
When can I plant cos lettuce? Again, can I start it inside?
Thank you0 -

Yes you can, although I would personally just sow the packet in a seed tray. Then pot them on when they are big enough to handle.
Its up to you of course, but you will be there for ever and a day, sowing each seed individually.I love seed sowing but would never do that

Cucumber don't like frost at all. Unless you are further south than London area then you won't be free from frost then. I'm in the Midlands and wouldn't risk it until the middle of May. Although about 5 years ago we have frost at the end of May, when its the full moon. Unless cucumbers take a while to germinate, which I don't recall they do. Then I'd wait until April before I sowed them.

We don't grow alot of lettuce as I don't like it. But OH does, we only grow "cut and come again" which I sow direct around late May time.0 -
Started my red onions, white onions and leeks just over a week ago in trays indoors (doing from seed) and little shoots have started to show but I'm worried as they look long and skinny - a bit like really skinny cress like you used to grow as a kid?!
Is this ok or should I start again??
Hi, Thats exactly what they look like, its fine. I say they look like bits of cotton with a loop on the top
Generally speaking as long as seedlings don't look dead, you would know what that looks like. Then you can't have done anything wrong as the seeds are programmed to grow as they should do. Its what they do0 -

I think the problem with leek last year was that I had seeds thickly planted. I want to grow them inside for a while, until they are like pencil thick and that is why I was going to grow one per youghurt pot. Granted, I probably will not manage to put in just 1 seed, but I will only keep one, weed the rest out. Good idea?
Cucumbers.. I am near Manchester. Quite cold here. Can I sow the cucuber now if I am going to take it out in May? Or shoud I wait?
What is "cut and come again" please?0 -

Yes, of course its a good idea. It is hard to get the seeds evenly spaced, I know.

I'd wait a while, you can of course keep them inside but then the plants grow rather big, lengthways  and its a question of where to put them. Have a look on the seed packet and see how long they take to germinate, then work backwards, timewise.

Whoops, sorry, its a type of lettuce, smaller than a normal one, where by you pick off leaves as you want them for the plate, then the plant grows new leaves and you cut again. You normally get three pickings from a plant.
Better for us as only one of us eats lettuce.0 -

Actually this would be ideal for us too, OH eats salad only occasionaly, where I could have it for my work lunch this way too. I don't buy salad very often for single reason that we would throw away half of it, but if I could grow this it would be ideal...
Do I just look for Cut and Come again seed packet? Is that how it is officialy called?0 -
I do cut and come again with any lettuces I grow. I just cut off leaves as I want them, starting with outside ones that look nice
yesterday lunch, lettuce cut and come again mix, land cress, winter spinach leaves0 -
Can I plant beetroot this month? How's best to do them - indoors on trays, or pots, or modules, or outdoors...?0

Is it possible to seed leeks straight into the ground this time of year?
Also my toms are about 2-3 inches long now and ready for moving. Do I plant the roots at the soil level now or plant them deeper as they're long and fragile? Will I harmm them planting them deeper into the new soil?0 -
I like to sow leeks in a 6" plant pot and I sow maybe half a tsp and don`t plick them out. They do well once in their holes in the ground
Weather is very cold tonight and will feel like -6 where I live so all little greenhouses have bubble wrap on top and fleece over lettuces in raised beds and in troughs. Fleece also over top layer of plants inside the patio grow. They were all fine this morning but tonight will be even colder. I think I will be delaying potato planting until the ground has warmed up again
I am still pricking out ie today, echinacea, cosmos, cabbages, garlic chives0
