i have to admit that my leeks have been outside all winter, they didn't get in the ground until too late last year so will probably become this year's leeks later on.
  • I have dug over the the veg plots this week. I bet it will be another 6 weeks before it is warm enough to plant anything. Still frosty in the Midlands

I finally cleared the garden, made 2 trips to the recycling centre, gave away 3 plants (rhododendron, pieris and unknown), the trees where cut and removed few weeks ago, so we were just left with some shrubs, old heather (with just a few green tip and lots of woody long branches), I am now left with almost blank canvas to sort it out (apart from apple tree, 2 currant bushes and gooseberry, 2 more rhododendrons, and unknown tree in the corner).

All going well, tomorrow we will build at least a couple of the raised beds and I can finally plant at least some of my new trees (dwarf apple, pear, plum and two cherries, plus a grape). I am looking forward to getting closer to 'sorted' garden.

Hoping this thread will motivate me to make the most of my allotment this year.

This will be our fifth year with varying successes and mistakes.

Had an attempt at sowing peppers a few weeks ago with nothing sprouting even after 3 weeks so threw them out.

To be fair, I had used some old seed and old compost.

Trying again with new seed and new compost so fingers crossed.

Have removed my tray of sweetcorn from airing cupboard which are sprouting.

Cherry tomatoes look like they are about to peep through.

Reading what everyone else is doing is urging me to sow more things.

Oh.........I have some lettuce in home greenhouse.........will go and check on them in a mo and then go to the allotment and get tidied ready for all the seedlings to flourish in a few months........hopefully.:D

This morning I planted a black current and red current bush, and a rhubarb crown, all had been kindly donated to me.
This week I need to plant some peas - I like the 'carpet tile' idea from Sally A and might give that a go.

    Hi everyone
Quite a productive weekend for us. Lots of tidying of the garden, including trimming back very large leylandi.
Planted the raspberries towards the back of the plot as it sounds like they will grow in most conditions. OH also planted a blackberry in a pot. On the flower side we planted a new honeysuckle to grow up and over a bench (fingers crossed-bench will be painted in the next couple of weeks).
Today we have sown tomatoes, basil, coriander, parsley, mint, leeks; nasturtiums and marigolds. So we have had a really good weekend.
We were going to sow out sweet peas and had our toilet rolls ready but then read the packet and realised we needed to soak them over night, doh!

    Hello green people.

I'm on the west coast of Scotland and I volunteer for a community garden project. We're trying sweetcorn this year as well, its up but also only1-2 inches tall and looking like grass, but then I spose it is a type of grass!

We don't have power at the site so we have built an old fashioned Victorian hotbed and use that to germinate tricky things. so far melon, 1 tomato, sweetcorn, pumpkin, sprouts, cabbages and leeks are up as well as the sweetcorn.
I'm a heirloom tomato person so there's a lot more tomatoes to come up as well. I think we'll have to sell off some of them if they all come up!
Oh and the okra is up as well, which surprised me!

My compost bin is in, and I have started filling it! We changed the two fence panels that were badly damaged by ivy that was in our garden (the stump was about 10-12cm in diameter!!!!)

We dug out the ground for one of the beds, and built one bed (thank got the plumber guy left his drill.screwdriver while he went to collect his other one - his was so much more powerful, that it took us about 15 min to put in the last 8 screws, when it took me an 1.5-2 hours to put the first 8 in!!!!!). It was 7:30pm by the time we went back in the house.

I have came up with the heating for my plastic greenhouse- I now leave some candles on at night, I got one of them in a lantern from Ikea, one in a terracotta flowerpot with a smaller pot as a lid, and as it was so cold tonight, I put one just on a plate as well. When we went in, my new greenhouse thermometer (min/max) was telling me that it was 2.0 C!!!!! The candles where quickly put on and the temp didn't dip below 3C in there tonight, although there was frost on the cars this morning.

A few years ago I had a fantastic show of sweet peas which I planted all down the side of my allotment and the flowers were beautiful.

    Don't think I soaked them.

At the moment my toilet rolls have been planted and are in the airing cupboard but nothing showing yet. (Only been a week)

They are taking their time along with the peppers.

Reading your comment made me think I should have soaked them?

Maybe an expert on sweet peas will come along and tell us what we should be doing. :D
