Wish my children had been younger when we took on the allotment. I think young kids are interested to see how things grow and its a great education for them.
if you want to see a stroppy teenager you should see my 4 year old when I tell her she mustn't water the weeds...the look of scorn and "well you do know they will die don't you???!"
Little treasure is maybe too educated lol. I do love seeing her at the plot tho, children grow up so fast now that it's a pleasure to see here without a care in the world digging for australia!0 -
Anyone had any joy with the reluctant peppers yet?
Been in airing cupboard and I don't want to temp fate but I spy one little hook peeping out so with a bit of luck...............the next few days will bring pepper heaven.
I had to buy pepper plants at a car boot sale last year. They did well but still not as good as doing completely from scratch by yourself.Make £10 a Day Feb .....£75.... March... £65......April...£90.....May £20.....June £35.......July £600 -
Is it too early to plant Courgette and Butternut Squash seeds? I can keep them in a conservatory for a while if the weather turns cold. I live near watford, just north of London.0

Never done squash but would leave courgette another month.
They quickly grow big and need to be in their position not too long after sowing. They last for ages and provide a great crop anyhow0 -
Had a decent morning down the allotment.
Repaired the fence (again!!!), put about 100 white onions in, 2 rows or parsnips. Got the remains of grass sods that had grown back end of last season.
Try to go again tommorow to put about another 100 onions in. Will also sow some spring onions and raddishes i think now too.
Did toms and peppers last year but was disappointed with yield and quality so not bothering with them this year.
Still not sure how best to plant mangetout? Think you do it in blocks rather than rows?0 -

I am sw and am sowing my courgettes and squashes in about 5 weeks
Peppers are just not coming up yet.
I have done another lot of pricking out today, most enjoyable
dill is up today and also more tomatoes. Fingers crossed as everything is hunky dory so far
I bought a cheap moisture meter and it is good and worth the few £
am waiting for onion sets to arrive to plant end of the month and have sown a few carrots in deep trays to pull early, already got one tray up
We are eating winter lettuce leaves and winter spinach and land cress almost every day, it was def worth planting them last autumn, must be saving lots of money and have sown more salad stuff for spring eating
am also starting to accumulate planter bags for cucs and tomatoes and maybe aubergines0 -

Hope no one minds me poking my head into this thread. I'm growing peppers and chillies for the first time this year, so have no idea if this was the right way to go about it. I bought a set of mini propagators from aldi, which I've popped ontop of a radiator cover for some bottom heat...so far I've had 8 chilli seedlings and 5 peppers.Sanity is the playground of the unimaginative!0 -

A little off topic : could I ask what you paid for your peppers last year, I am planning on doing one or two car boot sales this year and sell some of the inevitable surplus seedlings/plants. I have no idea of what prices to ask.
thanks0
