My chillis and peppers are doing really well-all my seeds were from the real seed company. The only ones where that look particularly small are the pretty in purple chillis but they are coming on now. I sowed all of mine back in early february and germinated them by the aga. I potted them all up a couple of weeks ago and most now have their second set of true leaves coming.
I followed the advice from the chillis galore forum for what to do and it seems to be working-although my plants are nowhere near what the ones people on that forum grow as I don't have a light set up!

i managed to get an hour or so at the allotment today, only managed to dig/clear a patch about 6ft by 1 1/2 foot and plant some lavender to show where our plot starts and the other one ends, also it will help invite the bees and insects. Still got lots of seeds to sew but also a lot of ground to dig over and de-weed. In the end torrential rain stopped play but it was nice to get up there.

    Hi guys,
    An advice please...

I planted my peas into the ground on Saturday and we got frost last night - the seeds were swelled up before I put them in.. do you think the frost killed them? Should I start swelling up new lot?

Also my chilli and tomato seeds are currently planted in my unheated conservatory.. I only started with them on Saturday. Do you think it is too cool there for them? Should I put them in the kitchen?
  • Really pleased with myself.

Had a weeks holiday last week and most of my seedlings have shown signs of life. :j

Got the allotment tidied and rotivated with hep from OH.

Yesterday was spent planting rather a lot of onions.

My Japanese onions planted in autmn seem to be doing ok and to look at the allotment you would think I had an obsession with the things LOL

I do not intend to buy ANY after June hopefully for a whole year and I think an attempt at French Onion Soup[ may well be on the agenda.

Keep looking at where I planted my asparagus a few years ago as this should be the first year we get a decent crop but nothing at all happening as yet. Think its April/ May they should come poking through ground? We shall see.

Rosy798 Do you grow beeding plants from seeds?

Never had a go at this. Have ordered 45o plugs from some deal I see in the paper to hopefully ease the cost of filling baskets.

Was £15 which I didnt think was too bad.
    Make £10 a Day Feb .....£75.... March... £65......April...£90.....May £20.....June £35.......July £60

Right, someone has to stop me. I have ordered another set of seeds yesterday from simplyseeds. Another £9...

Anyway, I think (well, I know) I am doing something wrong. I don't know if it is overwatering or underwatering, too hot or what. I have seeds coming up, and then they just get floppy. So, I have lost 2 of my 3 artichokes and 2 spinaches this time. How do i know what is the correct amount of water? I managed to save one of the artichokes by potting it into a bigger pot, other two are still there, but floppy and soft, so they won't last long. Anyway, it is all good fun whilst trying anyway.

If you're new to gardening then you're probably over watering and too warm.
The soil needs to be damp but not soggy and once germinated, not to hot or cold, so not on top of a radiator or in a cold unheated room. Plenty of light is essential to avoid leggy seedlings

I'm in London and my first spinach seeds will be going outside over the next couple of weeks, no need to sow indoors first.

Never grown artichokes from seeds before so other than reading the web can't offer any advice.

Are you growing anything else that is doing well?

Tomatoes are doing fine. Leeks just gone out into a 'blowaway', the salad and radish is there. Mushrooms are doing well as well!

Marigolds are not bad. Aubergines wouldn't germinate, but that is another story (I have a test going on with a few seeds trying to germinate in the water on the kitchen windowsill, and 3 weeks later only one seed is showing signs of life, so my guess is bad batch).

I'll keep trying and will get there. Oh, and broad beans are doing beautifully!!!!

You sowed too early for aubergines, indoors anytime from now (18c-20c) or outside from April.

I sow mine using the info on the above link and works well for me. Soil just moist and seeds barley covered.

Well done on all your successes.

The package said to sow in January/February! Anyway, I have 5 of Slim Jim germinated, and they are in the 'blowaway', still at two leaf stage. I am waiting for my 10cm pots and shuttle trays to arrive, so then I can bring them in for a bit to grow on, and pot into the bigger pots.

I can see lots of potting on going on here once my pots arrive. I am hoping to put my beans into the planter that I have this week and make a cane frame for them to grow over. I have 90cm deep planter (well, 3 of them) and I was going to put them in it, utilising some stones that we dug out from our garden to put in the bottom for drainage/stability.
