I'm now planning to sow my sweet peas at the weekend...fingers crossed! We have had a few days of good sunshine here and it's amazing the impact it's had on my chillis and peppers, their leaves have grown and they are looking more compact now. My tomatoes have begun to germinate, I only have 3 at present that haven't got loops on them! I'm still waiting for the herbs and flowers from the weekend to begin to germinate, but give it time!0

We had gales tonight and this morning. I was worried my Wilko's plastic greenhouse will not survive, and I will find it few doors (fences) down, but it was still there this morning!!!! I think I will be looking to put more weight/bricks on the bottom tubes as well, so I could sleep calm and not keep waking up thinking that I will have to go and replant everything.Spring into Spring 2015 - 0.7/12lb0

good plan about the airing cupboard then, I was being dense lol!
We brought a metal 3 shelved greehouse wotsit with a plastic cover and I've put it against our shed and screwed 6 metal eyes into the shed (3 up each side of the frame) and then attached the greenhouse frame with cable ties and it hasn't blown away...yet!
So much to do at the moment, lots and lots of digging on the alotment and I want to put my onions in very soon, think I'll take the kids over this afternoon and get cracking. So far I've dug over about 6ft square so will put a few onions in there. how much space should I leave between each one?I have some shallots and some onions.
Thanks again, I always love reading all these posts!0 -
Im roping in hubbie tomorrow to rotivate my allotment. (My rotivator was bought with money off mam and dad for fortieth a few years ago. Most women would buy shoes/handbags...........not me.;) I figured it would save me years of back breaking digging if Im in the allotment game long term which I intend to be.)
I have onions waiting to go in too hopefully this weekend.
I plant mine about 5 to 6 inches apart. Is it your first year smithy?
If so.........how exciting for you!! I can vividly remember digging up our first potatoes on the little bit of allotment we had managed to dig over in our first year. The mounds of potatoes from one little seed potato amazed me, and I have been hooked ever since.
A lot of people say why grow onions as they are so cheap to buy?
Well my onion sets cost me three quid at most and once grown and dried I plait them and hang in shed at bottom of garden. (Along with garlic) They last loads longer than shop bought onions and is so nice just to go down to the shed when one is needed. The one year I didnt grow them................I really missed them and vowed never to be without homegrown again.
Hope you get the bug too.!!
Still no signe of peppers.
Yesterday I filled my space in airing cupboard with courgettes and toms.
Coriander is sprouting well. Hopefully will save me a fortune as use loads in curries. Never grown coriander before.Make £10 a Day Feb .....£75.... March... £65......April...£90.....May £20.....June £35.......July £600 -
OOh don't know if anyone is interested. Anyone with spare Tesco clubcard vouchers to spend.........They are now offerring a magazine subscription called "Grow It" which would be helpful to all on this thread Im sure.
I ordered mine yesterday. You need £14 in vouchers.
Think it will be worth it as you often get free seeds throughout the year with this type of thing.Make £10 a Day Feb .....£75.... March... £65......April...£90.....May £20.....June £35.......July £600 -
What a busy month March is, so far I've sown:- Aubergine, Broad Beans, broccolli, brussel sprouts, butternut squash, cabbage, cauli's, celeriac, chilli, courgette, early peas, kale, leeks, mini peppers, nasturtium, oregano, parsnips, sugar snap peas, peppers, radish, spinach, spring onions and beefsteak tomato. I've also got 3 varities of potatoes chitting and I've planted Garlic, white onions, red onions and shallots.
I've also managed to squeeze in another 2 Blackcurrant bushes up at the Allotment.
This weekend I'm planning to sow some Carrots, chives, lettuce, parsley, dumpling squash, sweet peas, roma tomatoes, dwarf beans and baby turnips.
I'm very lucky as I have a good sized Garden, Greenhouse, patio area and I have an Allotment too, still manage to fill it all though.
This Gardening lark gets so addictive and I love it.;)
Just can't wait for things to start poking through and showing signs of life.:)
Good Luck everyone.:D"WASTE NOT, WANT NOT!"GC for OH, myself, DD18 & DD16 includes Toiletries, cleaning stuff & Food.

Kantankrus Mare - Love your user name! We got our plot last year in may a week before I was taken into hospital with pre-eclampsia, no last year was a bit of a write off lol! So this year we have a 4 year old girl who just loves mud and learning so the allotment is a haven for her, and a 9 month old little boy who loves being outside in the pushchair and is happy to watch (for now!!). No doubt by the time summer is here he'll br crawling round eating mud I expect!(hope no one from social services is reading )
So officially (in our books) it's our first proper year. We've got the bug already just from the few bits we've grown in pots in the garden but the opportunity to spend some family time on a hobby and hopefully have some yummy food too just has us hooked!
Thanks for the onion advice btw!0 -
Your welcome smithy and just for the record , Im not really that cantankerous lol
Wish my children had been younger when we took on the allotment. I think young kids are interested to see how things grow and its a great education for them.
Mine are almost 18 and almost 16. The eldest (son) has never shown any interest at all but daughter comes down with me occasionally and doesnt mind weeding which comes in usefulMake £10 a Day Feb .....£75.... March... £65......April...£90.....May £20.....June £35.......July £600 -
