Veg to plant in March and things to do.

First raised bed competed today before rain set in! I mixed my clay [STRIKE]soil [/STRIKE]with some sharp sand, horse manure and 'soil improver' from B&Q. And the compost from my last year's pots and planters. Hope this will work. I put the the grape in, need to think of some sort of support structure for it now - it is in the corner of the garden, so will be growing along the two panels at 90 degree angle.
I then went mad and put in 12 shallots 'Red Sun', 10 shallots 'Golden Gourmet' (because 2 where mouldy in the pack!), 3 garlic heads (well, 40+ cloves)'Fokhagyma' and 50 onions 'Red Baron'. And that is my first bed nearly gone! I know, they are a bit dense at the moment, but my plan is not to wait until all are ready and use them while they grow (so, thin them as they grow).
Weather permitting, we might try and put in another bed tomorrow (also, if we not decide to put the flooring the dining room first...).
Oh, and whilst OH had hire car for work (4x4 - huge) we went to B&Q and got the rest of the sand, soil improver and compost for other beds - might be enough, might be not, but the bulk will be done, hopefully.
When we were putting stuff in the garage, I found the kohl rabi starter set that I got in Aldi few weeks ago, so have sown those now as well. (in the 'propagator' provided by Aldi).
My day done. I am exhausted - but happy.Spring into Spring 2015 - 0.7/12lb0 -
Oooh, I'm having a go at Kohl Rabi too this year.
I bought the seeds from Lidl after reading a post about it on here, worth a try!0 -
Hope no one minds me poking my head into this thread. I'm growing peppers and chillies for the first time this year, so have no idea if this was the right way to go about it. I bought a set of mini propagators from aldi, which I've popped ontop of a radiator cover for some bottom heat...so far I've had 8 chilli seedlings and 5 peppers.
fab!!!!!!
mine were brilliant last year, just cheap seeds from ebay. More expensive seeds this year and they aren`t budging0 -
three raised beds in today, one filled and planted with garlic (white and pink x 35 and elephant x 4) plud 100 sturon onions and 50 red onion, oh and some shallots too.....
THe other two beds need more compost and then the smaller one (4.5' x 6.5') will be for strawberries and the other nearer the greenhouse (4.5' x 9.5') will be for runner and french beans I think..... then there are the other 6 beds that need edging....
and the raspberries to go in (and dig over the ground first!) and then the compost bins need moving from the top of the garden to the bottom.....
erm... I think I have planned a little too much... AGAIN!sealed pot challange #572!Garden fund - £0!!:D£0/£10k0 -

thanks
Think we paid about fifty pence a plant. We bought caulis off him as well as I never seem to have luck with these, though.............as I speak I have 7 seedlings going strong in greenhouse.
The man was selling allsorts and was doing a roaring trade!!!
I had the same thought as you. I'd love to produce more seedlings than I need and sell them when I do a car boot.
I figure it would pay for compost and other expenses of being a veg and fruit grower making what you grow technically free food!Make £10 a Day Feb .....£75.... March... £65......April...£90.....May £20.....June £35.......July £600 -
Thanks, that's about what I was planning on selling them for so that's good news hopefully. I might try for a little more on tomatoes like Sungold and the like. It's all very well having all these seedlings but now comes the issue of potting them on and the associated space issues. Ah well, I like a challenge and the idea that it will pay for some of my gardening costs is keeping me focused:j.
Is there anyone that can suggest a good car boot sale in SE London?0 -
I have also started thinking about where the heck am I going to store all the squashes, onions, shallots, garlic, marrows omg time to get my thinking cap on as july/august will come soon enough0

Hi everyone - seems like we are all doing well.
Beefsteak tomato are poking through, so are nasturtiums and aubergines but no sign of anything else but I have been told that the Peppers and chillies take a lot longer, just have to be patient. It's a bit grey and drizzly here so will wait until tomorrow before I venture out to the Greenhouse to check on Seeds in there.:o"WASTE NOT, WANT NOT!"GC for OH, myself, DD18 & DD16 includes Toiletries, cleaning stuff & Food.

I often carboot my excess plants and the people love them. I sell peppers and chillies for a £1 and toms for 50p. Best sellers are always the bedding plants at 12 for £1 though, I never have enough. Still get people stopping me to ask if I will have any more. I always think that they sell so fast they must be too cheap, have had people fighting over them, but it helps with my costs.0

I changed my mind about sowing squashes and courgettes and they are all in the propagator at 24 now. I have the room to molly coddle them when they germinate
tights are the answer as well as hooks in the garage for storage. That`ll work well for squashes.0
