To be honest I would just call them apologise and then ask if the charge could be refunded. I had a disaster of a January (post Christmas!!!) and incurred a fair few charges. I just called my bank, apologised - promised not to do it again, and they refunded £210 into my account. They were happy to do it as I was usually very good, and I was happy with them for doing it and it was all pretty amicable..... if you don't like what I say, then don't listen....

I prefer to write but I did it last month when there was a charge on a debit which I had changed to the 1st of each month but it went out on the 25th instead.
It's still your money not theirs!!!!!0 -

Nationwide do seem to have the nasty habit of closin ppls accounts down so id make sure you have a second account to fall back on an if they do payout be prepared to move. what they do is decide to payout then send you a letter giving you 30 days to clear your account. if they do this then contact the financial ombudsman service and ask them for advice on if they are allowed under the individual circumstances.0 -

No one knows for certain, but it's very likely they will pay up before the court date.0 -

Hi... my first post.
I have been going round in circles with nationwide charges for the past couple of years. It started with them giving me £50 charge & now seems to continue every month. This month they charged me £75.00 and next month it will be £176.00!!!! This is due to problems with wages going in and overlapping of direct debit & visa which made me go over my overdraft by around £3.20!!
I telephoned nationwide yesterday and asked if there was any way they could forgo the charges or i could pay in installments for just one month to get me back on my feet and was told there is no way they can do this!! and that i should possibly cancel all my direct debits instead.
I cant believe the bad service, i have been with nationwide for 25 years and also have my mortgage, a loan and 5 different accounts (myself & kids) and they cannot even forgo a £75 payment to help me get back on my feet!!!
I have just set up my parachute bank account & transferring all my incomings into that. I am just about to send of my first letter asking for all the infomation (they also tried to con me on this and told me i would need to pay £10 for each statement)... after reading this site i rang this morning & just asked for the penalty charges and now they have just asked for the 1 payment.
Looking at this site it seems Nationwide really dig their heels in but i'm determined to get my money back (just the last 2 years works out at £1,400)!!

P.S My friend just did this successfully with First Direct & got back £4,300 on 2 different account within a month & no quibbling!!Successfully claimed: £2119.14 from Nationwide
Just requested: £289.06 Argos, £140.27 GE Money, £75.52 Grattan, £123.42 Egg, £391.46 Cahoot0 -
Hi all
Since last year I have been unfortunately having some financial problems, though after a year I have successfully overcome that. I have had a overdraft secured of £50 but I would expect Nationwide to make sure I do not go passed that amount. Instead, without me realising I went way over limit because they honoured all my phone bills an average of £70 on top of that £50. when I called them up they said it's apparently my responsibility which I do partially agree though then again it's there job to actually stop honouring charges and let me know how much I am overdrawn.
By anychance can I still claim back the £30 monthly charge + interest which I have been paying and also would I face loosing my account because if which I do, I will have to open a new account.
THANKS0 -

Hi there,
I have used this site back in January to reclaim £1400 of bank charges from Nationwide. I like others have been charged as much as £600 in one month from snowballing charges which only occurred as my employers had financial difficulties and kept bouncing my wages! I have since been made redundant as of this Thursday 5th April.
OK my question is this. I wrote all the appropriate letters to Nationwide, have had a couple of replies explaining why I can't have my charges back etc...
I made a claim online for taking them to court. They acknowledged the claim almost immediately and now have 28 days (which will be up on 20th April).
They acknowledged the claim and have ticked that they intend to defend the whole claim.
Has anybody had to get to this stage with Nationwide and what are the likely outcomes from this? I haven't asked for anything extortionate only what has been taken since the charges snowballed?
Can anyone help? What is likely to happen now? Anyone got to this stage and then still won? Does anyone know what will happen if I lose?
Would really appreciate any feedback :T
