Can anyone help me because I keep hearing all these success stories of people having their bank charges refunded. Sadly it doesn't seem that easy for me I have now followed Martin's advice and sent the necessary letters and they have been ignored, then I received a letter saying that's what the charges are if you cannot abide by this you will have to find alternative banking arrangements! My question is that I'm not actually claiming charges from a bank it's a building society!
Before I submit the court form and pay the court fees can anyone tell me if it makes a difference that it's a building society, please?

Banks seem to be very fickle. Sometimes they pay out upwards of £5k on a claim with the first letter, when others will hold out right to the bitter end for £150. It's impossible to predict!
If you have gone through the whole process and have threatend court action, file your claim online through MCOL. You can claim your charges, just like anyone else.
Which BS is it, anyway?Regards, Dibs.

Thanks for your comments, It's the Nationwide. I did phone them today to give it one last chance before doing the court thing but they weren't interested at all. They said they closed my file after they received my first letter! They told me they were within their rights to charge me and if I think I should take them to court then I should!! Also told me that they have published info saying they would only refund charges that were made due to their error as my case was not down to them they would not even think of any refund! It's not easy is it!0

No they make it as fiddly and frightening as they can have you tried looking on consumeractiongroup.com web site they are fab for help and guidance .0

Thanks for the website address. I'll have a look but I think my only option is to go ahead and take them to court. I have opened an account elsewhere so all prepared! Well, think I am!! Thanks to everyone for helping to give me the extra push to carry on. This was my first time on here and I'm glad I joined :T0

Sure there has been some banks refunding after the 1st letter, just luck of the draw I suppose. However many people on here have fought tooth & nail to reclaim charges through the courts.
Some people have had to wait 6 months if not longer to get a result.
I felt a little disheartened too as I'm claiming against Lloyds, it's already been 7 weeks and waiting to here the outcome of my submitted claim filed on MCOL on the 21st March. I hear court dates for Lloyds are around July time
Patience in this case is certainly a virtue and to be honest will be well worth the wait. I think if I was paid out 7 weeks ago that money would all be gone now!!
As stated above there is great help on CAG website though MONEYSAVINGEXPERT has excellent advisors and forums too.

Hi guys
I have been a lurker on this site for a while now and the messageboards have really helped me with my bank charges against barclays and barclaycard and nationwide - so thank you!!! Still ongoing mind due!!
However, i do need some advice and help if poss from anyone on here ????
Although its not directly bank charges related i couldnt find any other suitable topic for this to go under.
Basically i had a website and signed up to a google brand named "getmeonmedia.com" who give your website a search ranking based on keywords etc....
For the past 6 months or so i had been receiving charges each month of around £40 (i.e. 56.00 euro NCL on statement) from a company called "air arena sydney" - i had no idea who this company were!! So i called my credit card company up and blocked any transaction going to this company and also logged a dispute claim.
Following the next few months or so i noticed that this payment was still going out my account, i did an internet search and could not find any company listed under this name or even any clues. My credit card company finally got back to me and said that it was some advertising company in Australia.
Until they sent me the paperwork showing that i had agreed to the transactions it became fimiliar at last. I had signed up for a $5 30day free trial, what i hadnt realised was that i would be charged around £40 each month as a subscription.
To cut the long story short my account was setup, however, i never used it and getmeonmedia.com never actually provided me with any other product than to set this account up. The account was never activated and they did no other work than set the account up.
I queried this with them as they had taken around £200 from me, when i requested a refund i have received a reply of check the terms and conditions etc and that they sent me 5 emails to my inbox (that i cannot find!) reminding me that i would still be billed even if i did not activate my account.
The questions i have got kind of relate to the bank charges thread:-
1) should i take this matter further or am i wasting my time ?
2) i have unsubscribed now so the payments are no longer being processed
3) i believe that i should threaten to take them to court on the basis that i do not believe that the £200 taken from me reflects there costs in setting the account up, regardless of the t & c's, (just like the bank charges).
Although i apparantly did agree to the service surely the money taken from me cannot reflect there costs??
Im desperate for some advice as this is quite alot of money.
thanks in advance0 -

There are a lot of internet products that promise a 'free trial' then ask for your credit card number. Red flag right there. Free does not require credit card numbers, kind of negates the whole free thing doesnt it. The onus is then on the customer to cancel the contract before full subscription starts.
You may have a case for a mis-sold product given that you were totally unaware you had signed for the duration instead of a free trial but that depends on very careful reading of the wording of the original offer and not neccessarily the contract itself.
I'd advise to take this to a solicitor, perhaps one of thse half hour free sessions or the CAB but certainly get some further advice on this.0 -
I am about to start trying to claim charges for my nationwide credit card, can anyone let me know what nationwide are like for claiming charges back off? HSBC are taking between 5-8 weeks at the mo, for example. Is nationwide like that? Or is it court or nothing? The will to save every money saving penny we can0
