  • Can anyone tell me whether the charges I have received are lawful? I have a nationwide flex account, without a chq book and no overdraft facility - my only withdrawals are via a cashpoint/atm, on occasion the atm allows me to go over and then Nationwide charges me £20.48(when most of the time it tells me I am up to my limit) - when i spoke to someone at Nationwide they said occasionally they allow a buffer for emergencies, even though I have no overdraft and have not requested it.

    Thanks in advance.

What was the £20.48 charge? Was there a narrative to the charge? Or is that the charge plus interest?

They add this narrative to the bottom of the statement

£20.48 will be debited from your account 28 days following the date of tis statement . Unauthorised overdraft interest rate currently 1.382% per month.

That is interest on the overdraft and is non claimable. The charges are for exceeding or going over the limit/returned direct debits/standing orders etc.etc. I don;t think from what you have written that £20.48 INTEREST is claimable.

I don't want to hijack someone elses thread but I've got the same charges on a Nationwide flex account. I don't have an o/d facility either but a dd was presented twice in the same week. Payment was taken out twice but not added back in for a week, and so I've been charged £20.48 too. That wasn't my fault surely?

Can I claim that back? If so who from?

You would need to claim it back from the company who presented the dd.

You cannot hold the bank to ransom because you cannot balance your own figures.
    £2.00 Savers Club = £34.00 So Far

+ however may £2 coins I have saved in my Terramundi since 2000.

Has anybody claimed from Nationwide Building Society.
Are they likely to close my account or stop my overdraft.
    Help gratefully received

You can if their charges are deemed to be unfair(that would be consumer law). Are you new to this part of the site?

They won't close your account if you claim(cos that is a breach of the FSA Waiver on Bank charges.

Sorry it was a quick reply to both people posting.

Charges for the dd that was presented twice need to be claimed from the company present dd.

What I mean't by holding the bank to ransom is that whilst I agree the charges are ridiculously high and should be reduced. I also find it irritating that people who do not have the common sense or cannot be bothered to balance their accounts gets so irate when they get charged.

You are responsible for balancing your own accounts, if you go overdrawn then you are borrowing money you haven't got and therefore should be charged for that facility. The banks are a business and are in it to make money. If you don't want to get charged don't go overdrawn or at least don't go overdrawn without an overdraft facility.
