  • I recently opened a nationwide bank account to go travelling as they dont charge you to take money out abroad, when opening the accoubt they asked if i wanted an overdraft, i said no as i explained that i wanted my parents to pay money in to my account when my card declined the lady said thats what would happen, i was travelling all over the places so i declined internet banking too, a few times my account go declined but since returning in december i have recently found out that they have charged me for unauthorised use off an overdraft, i was told false information, when i went to the agency nationwide office the lady said they shouldnt have charged me and if i call the number on the back of the card they will repay the fine, i have not had any sucess as the lady on the phone has once hung up on me, and the other lady has told me i have to go back to nationwide where i opened the account so i am been thrown between two different people, I am still been charged at £20 a hit, which has now happened 3 times and I keep putting money on my card to stop the charges but they keep happening, I have been to a bigger branch where i was informed someone call me back the next day... i never received thaut call and now i dont know where i stand... i was wondering if any one has been thru the same problem with nationwide or if anyone has any advice they can give me! Thank you xxx
  • Are the nationwide still asking people to close their accounts once they have reclaimed bank charges. I know this was the case a year ago but wondered if it had changed. Any info would be grateful

This very rarely happens now as it is specifically mentioned in the FSA waiver directions:
    (18)
    the firm must not close accounts or threaten closure of accounts of customers when it might reasonably appear that this is for the purpose (or with the intent) of penalising customers that have complained about unauthorised overdraft charges for having complained, or deterring future complaints from these customers or others. For the avoidance of doubt, the firm may close accounts or threaten to close accounts where there is good justification for doing so based on the circumstances of the particular case;

when my card declined the lady said thats what would happen

I'm not clear on what you're saying, but I guess it is that the lady told you without an overdraft, you would not incur any charges if you withdrew more than your balance. Is this correct?

Please read Martin's step by step article on reclaiming for your options.
  • Thanks Animal. I did as you suggested and had a letter back from Nationwide BS confirming that £30 would be credited to my account within the next 7 days.

A great result and I am delighted. Thank you very much for your suggestion.
  • When claiming bank charges, which date do you use - the date it actually happened, the date we were notified of charges or the date the charges were actually taken from our account? Also, I have read a thread from 2006 which says Nationwide was closing the account of anyone who claimed against them, do you know if that is still the case?

Use the date the charges were actually taken from your account
I have read a thread from 2006 which says Nationwide was closing the account of anyone who claimed against them,
This very rarely happens now. The fSAwaiver directions specificaly prevents banks from closing a/c's as a retalitory action against claimants
  • I get paid on the 24th of every month into a HSBC current account and have a standing order to transfer my rent on the same day into my Nationwide Flexaccount (I manage all bills through this one account) My rent is then set up to come out of my Nationwide account on 28th of every month.

Unfortunately, as Christmas fell within these dates my HSBC standing order was delayed and did not go through until after Xmas (29th Dec)

Nationwide have charged me £30 for an 'Unsufficient Funds for Standing Order' fee, which took me into an overdraft. As I have no overdraft agreed with them (I was declined even a £50 overdraft with them!) they then charged me another £20 which took the total charges to £50.

I just spoke on the phone to an advisor and they said I do not qualify for a refund.

Where do I stand considering the Bank Holiday period between both banks?

  • Did Nationwide explain their reason for different Bank Holiday period to HSBC bank. Although money wasnt in your account yet im sure they were aware that it was on the way and have just used the opportunity to cream £50 quickly for doing absolutely nothing.

They could have bounced the standing order, but there isn't a nice fee for that like there is for bouncing a direct debit, which may have something to do with it.
