If the figure you were saving with them is 30K and they could lose that for the sake of £30, there should be no argument
That won't wash, because the £30K was being moved away from Nationwide anyway, and it's that (failed) transaction that has resulted in the £30 charge.

Presumably, the £30K was still residing in an eSaver and hadn't been transferred across into the FlexAccount in time?
  • YorkshireBoy - Yes, you are spot on. The £30k was in my wife's e-savings account (she is a lower rate tax payer) ready to be transferred to our joint FlexAccount. You are also spot on with your point about Nationwide "losing" £30k to the competition so they will be less sympathetic.

On that point, some other banks allow you to move the money in the future. EG - Move £30k from e-savings to FlexAccount on say 23/01/2009.

Nationwide's web site does not allow you to do that, you have to do it on the day making the likelihood of incurring charges much more likely.
  • I think a lot of the goodwill/first offense type let off's went out the window when the number of people claiming charges back went up dramatically a few years back

To be honest, you're still making money (or you ought to be with £30K stoozed!). I wouldn't waste much time over it. Maybe ask the next time you're in branch, but I (as a fellow stoozer) wouldn't be writing letters, or filing claims, to be honest.

A tip for the future, as soon as you've initiated a DD pull, immediately shift the funds from savings to current account. Yes you'll lose a days interest (£2.50 on £30K at current rates?), but that's the price you pay for peace of mind.

Good luck with your stoozing (from now on ;)).
  • Thanks YB - You are probably right, I am making money on the £30k being stoozed and ultimately I was in the wrong. I fully appreciate that Nationwide are a business that needs to make profit (sorry BS's make a surplus don't they?!) but it just really annoyed me that they behaved like this.

I guess I should just let it go and get on with my life it is still bugging me though!

Off for a beer, thanks for your steer.........
  • Hi stevebedford,

Write to the Head Office in Swindon. Explain everything (first time charge etc). The teams that deal with letters are generally more experienced and helpful than the team that are on the phones.
  • My son is in severe financial hardship and he has applied in person, with myself present at hius local branch to reclaim his bank charges over the last few years.
They are refusing to do anything until the court case is finalized. Has anyone else experienced this attitude with them? If so do you have any advice please? They know he is out of work after being in a very high paid job.
    Thank you
  • hello, i put in a claim for a refund way back in feb last year, received usual its on hold letter.

found out about hardship claiming route and requested this around aug of last year, to which i received basically a get stuffed and wait like the rest letter, so i left it.

my financial situation has become increasingly worse so i again sent another letter requesting, well more like pleading that they review my case urgently.

my basis for hardship was i am only receiving an income of £240pm, thousands in mounting debts, outgoings of nearly £1000 a month, rent, bills, food etc. stated: i very often, especially now its so cold have to chosse between warmth or food. i was completely honest with them.

recently, they closed my account due to arrears i cant afford to pay back. i am in an obvious situation of hardship. my life is a complete financial mess and due to my living arrangements, am liable for my own rent as i cant claim for it. i am suffering a financial and life crisis, constant legal threats and possible homelessness due to my rent situation. i didnt need to lay it on thicker than it is as the truth of my situation speaks massively.

anyway today i received this letter back.

    Dear Mr Nuckinfobhead

Thankyou for your request for a refund of charges on your flexaccount.

I have just reveiced the papers and will be reviewing them as soon as possible. Once i have finished, I will write to you with my findings. We expect this to be by 1 March 2009.

The nationwide group uses the financial services authority rules when dealing with customers' concerns. We have enclosed a leaflet that explains or internal complaints procedure.

    yours sincerely

    (nice flash signiture)

    the end

for starters they thanked me for asking for my money back??!

i wonder if their findings will be the £1600 i am owed?

anyway does this look like i am getting somewhere finally?

any help / experience would be appreciated please

i have looked about and theres not many (that i can see) that have received anything yet from nationwide, so i do not know what to expect??
  • I got a letter from Jenni Wills as well today.

It was just the statement of means form and a covering letter but seems they are a hell of lot more professional at dealing with these than Halifax - we have a claim on my partners account which they are being absolute ***ers about.

Its just a shame we're claiming £350 from them and £5k from Halifax :(

Can you post updates though as i'm a stage behind you with Nwide
  • she gets about huh ;p

yep i absolutely will, good luck. i did the statement of means form first time round, this time i just explained it in a letter.

if/when they refuse first time just dont leave it nearly 6months like i did to try again!

they may not protest as much for £350, i dont know. good luck though, when i first claimed i found nationwide to be as helpful as lead flippers. so this time we'll see

i hope i will be back screamin whoop whoop whoop in the not so distant.

will keep it posted here if i do
