For those who want to start claiming charges with Barclays now.

I just sent a letter to my bank requesting a fully comprehensive list of all past charges.
I enclosed a cheque hoping they will do it for me for free as I've been only four years with them.
    They cashed a cheque.
Information - never enough, questions - always too many, decisions - not always the best

  • I am writing on behalf of my OH. I saw last months barclay statement whilst I was trying to sort out all his finance and i noticed that he is overdrawn but he was charged 3 separate times of £22 in one month, and also other things. Are these the sorts of charges he may be able to claim back. I am completely new to all this sorry.

  • I requested copies of statements (for which barclays charged me), then sent off a letter claiming the charges. I received two separate letters, one relating to charges prior to the introduction of the 'personal reserve' for which they said that they were part of the test case so would keep it on hold, and the other relating to charges incurred since the personal reserve, for which they simply said no, they aren't returning the charges.

Does anyone have any suggestions of what to do next?!!

    any suggestions very gratefully received.
  • request for your personal reserve to be removed at you local branch to stop the 'usage' charges. also cancel any direct debits or any other transactions that could lead to further charges.
  • I'm getting charged the £22 for the reserve a few times a month. Is this different from the normal charges and can I claim it back?

I have been since 2007 been battling with barclays in 2 claims one for myself one for my mum, both have had different outcomes so far, whilst they havent turned my claim down and have put it on hold pending the appeal they turned my mum down outright back in 2007, i wrote bk to them informing them (wwithint the 8 days they requested) that the matter wasnt closed as they intended and i wld be seeking advice from the financial ombudsman, being nawty  i let it fall by the wayside waitin fro news on the appeal. i checked back on this site today and read up on financial hardship waiver the fsa had put in, i have today written a letter to barclays on behalf of my mum and wanted an opinion as im a bit out of practice

    Dear Sir or Madam

I write further to my previous correspondence in which I requested the refund of the bank charges totalling £4,547.94. In my last letter dated 03/08/2007 I stated that I would be contacting the Financial Ombudsman regarding my financial hardship which I believe has been exacerbated by the excessive bank charges. Under the FSA waiver rules I believe I fit the financial hardship criteria and would like my case to be dealt with straight away. The July 08 guidance states several possibly criteria that a person would have to meet to qualify for financial hardship claim.

I am not only an OAP but have to continue working in order to pay the debts that I have incurred

I have in previous correspondence for all intents and purposes provided you with enough information to support my claim and do not believe that you came to the decision not to refund my charges fairly considering there is over 750,000 claims many thousands of these you have paid out which are the same as mine.

I request, therefore, a financial statement from you in order for me to complete in order to claim financial hardship and pursue my claim with you.

I also ask you to please reconsider my claim for £4547.94 for these reasons. Or I am prepared to accept £3995.00 which is the claim without the added interest within 14 days of this letter, and for such purposes time shall be of the essence, as full and final settlement of my claim.

I look forward to hearing from you within 14 days with an offer of a claim settlement or my financial statement in order for me to carry on my proceedings with the Financial ombudsman

    Yours faithfully

    any advice wld be great

    thanks

  • i have 2 accounts with barclays, one which i use all the time the other doesnt get used at all.when i logged onto my bank yesterday i was shocked to discover that they had taken £318 from my main account and transfered it to my other to cover me being overdrrawn. turns out that back in august i mistakingly transfered £50 from the wrong account and ever since then they have been charging me £22 pr week! i had no idea that this was happening, they said that they had sent me letters but i hadnt recieved anytihng. Can i reclaim this charges? i spoke to the bank and they basically said it was my own fault and wouldnt do anything.
  • I have had the same problem with Barclays today. I changed address last month and recieved my first statement today to my new address. I was shocked to find that Barclays had charged £22 for every five days that my account has been in 'reserve'.

This is the first time I have heard this new piece of banking jargon. In the branch they explained that the terms and conditions of the account had changed, that they sent out a letter many months ago where I had the option of opting out of this 'reserve'.

I told them that I did not opt into this reserve and asked why do I have to opt out? They explained that they were perfectly within their rights to do this and that the FSA has approved this new charge of £22 for every 5 days that the account is in reserve.

To me this reserve sounds just like an unwanted and expensive overdraft and is a new loophole for the banks to rip off customers.

As far a getting money back from Barclays for these fees I hit a brick wall with the branch and with their complaints department: (0800 282 390) I was furious by this stage. I immediately paid the balance and closed my account on the spot. It seemed that Barclays were happy enough to loose a customer than waive a couple of fees. The complaints department were even very helpful with their advice on closing the account.

I put this down to an expensive lesson learned but if anyone has any success with these new reserve charges being refunded I'd love to hear.
  • Am in the same boat - 270 now and found when they phoned me and they will not accept the fact that even though I sent a change of address form that anything happened

I too did not know about the new reserve fees and had been charged for going into this reserve. I rang Barclays customer services and played hell with them, I told them that I had not been notified and had not agreed to this, they removed the charges and removed the reserve. I think it comes down to who you speak to on the day! Some are helpfull, others couldn't give a monkeys! I personally detest Barclays and will never do business with them again!
Good luck and dont let them win!
