  • On the 27 January instant I received a letter from Alena Spencer [Barclays Bank customer relations advisior] with an offer of £2000 in the form of a goodwill offer. My intial claim against Barclays Bank was for £3760 which included court fees. After much thought I decided that I would accept the offer and signed the documentation. However today 13 February I received a letter from the same advisor stating " Due to you taking court action in April 2007 you chose to reject our offer. As a result the offer has expired and can no longer be accepted". I telephoned and asked for Alena Spencer and alas she was unavailable. I was informed by another advisor that 80% of claimants against Barclays have had similar offer letters but have since been put on hold awaiting the judges decision in the current court case. Why send an offer out ,then within 2 weeks reject it? Can anyone enlighten me on this subject? Has anyone else had a similar experience?
  • Hi, I was wondering if anybody could give me some advice please.

All I keep reading about is success stories, in which case why is my stomach in knots at the thought of this process?

Basically ive written to Barclays asking for the summary of charges ive been charged over the last 6 years. I received a letter back along with 1 sheet of paper listing entries and total fees for each year in the last 6 years. Its over £2000 in total, now i am in the process of writing out my second letter but im scared to death they make a statistic out of me. All the talk of parachute accounts, do you still have to keep your current account in motion whilst you are going through the reclaiming process? I nearly opened another current account today but thought Barclays would never pay out if they see if gone to another bank.....
Also ive spoken to people in the legal field and theyve literally said "why should they pay you, you were overdrawn and kept spending the money" which obviously isnt reassuring.
Oh god im really not looking forward to this!
Please can somebody offer me some advice & calm me down

    Thank you !

Don't panic, just write out your second letter and send it off...You'll probaly just get sent a letter back saying that they've made a note of your request and it will be dealt with once the test case is over...Open up another account and if you want to move your money, pay bills, etc through your new account do so, it won't make much difference regarding your claim and it's better to be prepared as it can take a week or two to open a new account and recieve your debit card, cheque book, etc...Once the test case has finished (and the judge has given his verdict) you can contine your claim either in court (if the judgement is in the banks favour) or directly with barclays (if the judgement is in the OFT's favour and barclays play ball)...
I'm currently trying to sqeeze £5000 out of barclays and started this process over a year ago now and had a stay put on my case weeks before my court date...just hang in there you'll be fine, and remember that barclays are banking on this all becoming to much for us all and everyone giving up and shuting up and quietly paying more charges to them to add to their billions
  • Wrote asking Barclays for list of charges. They sent back a summary which shows 7 entries of charges but doesn't list actual dates charges taken from account so i can't work out interest. The summary report just shows these charges made between March-December 2007. Tried to look online but online banking doesn't allow me to go bach this far. What should i do next?
  • Generally banks will take the charges at the same each month, so have a look at your recent bank statement and take that date as the "norm" then use a similar date for each month in the Interest Calculator.
  • Thanks Edinburghlass. I will action this advice. thanks from karen and phil. :)

They just sent me a list too for each year just a list of fees, no actual dates, i just took a copy of it and then wrote my 2nd letter requesting that they refund me and attached the copy of fees. They can sort through it themselves. Ive now sent off my 2nd letter and sit waiting through these 14 days !

(Thank you Phill for your reply, it was encouraging ! Im inclined to go to new bank but think ill wait a couple of weeks, i just think it will get Barclays back up and go against me if i change accounts now.)

I'm rec'ing my Barclays account and have come across £3.50 charges with the narrative:

    " AUTH O/DRAFT USUAGE FEE "

    Is this re-claimable?
    "onwards & upwards"
  • is it normal for people not to hear anything back from the banks after their first letter requesting the funds ?
