Thanks for that. I'll probably be back for more assistance in the New Year. In the meantime hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and a Happy and very Prosperous New Year

  • Hi all, !!! PLEASE HELP !!!

I have just received letter back from Barclays offering me £760 as a goodwill gesture, when the total charges are actually £1,490 what do I do?
Do I accept the offer and move on or should I fight them for all of it!!
I am just worried that I will end up with nothing at all.

    Many thanks in advance
  • Started the ball rolling yesterday :-

    a) Delivered letter to my local Barclays Bank claiming return of £2093.01 (incl interest of £193.01)

    b) Sent recorded delivery letter to Barclaycard claiming return of £384.59 (incl interest of £64.59)

I have given them 14 days to respond. If i do not get a satisfactory reply within 14 days i will then give them 7 days to pay up or i will issue immediate proceedings. This will be MY timetable and not the banks ! i will keep you informed of developments. I suspect what will happen is :-

    a) Complete rejection by Barclays & Barclaycard
    b) I will give them 7 days to pay
    c) An offer of around 50% of my claim will be made which will be rejected
    d) Immediate proceedings will be issued.
    e) Barclays & Barclaycard will pay my claims in full plus interest a couple of days before judgement is entered- around April07?
    f) Barclays and Barclaycard will close down my accounts
    e) Alternative banking arrangements will be put in place in Jan 07

As i am now in the black i look forward with( interest !) to developments.
  • Hi all,

New to money saving site so please forgive me if i have posted in wrong section.

    Steps I have taken...

Sent first letter to Barclays with £10 cheque asking for bank statements.
Got statements and my cheque back.
Highlighted all charges (total came to £1,490) and sent MSE letter asking for money back.

Got reply saying they are offering £760 as a good will gesture (no mention of closing account)

Now I am unsure weather to take money and just be happy or should I reject offer and carry on to try and get it all back.

I am worried that if I reject offer that I might end up with nothing.

What would be my next step if I reject offer is there a letter on this site to help??

    Only you can decide.

If you're happy with what's been offered, take it.

If you want to persue the lot, you should get it, but it will take longer.

You can tell them, you accept this only as part payment and you will recover the rest. They may withdraw the offer, then you will need to file a claim.

I sent off the first letter to in the list of steps to reclaim UNFAIR bank charges on monday second class received notification from Barclays today saying they will send it out and there will be no charge!!! They enclosed the cheque in the letter.

I am a little worried by this.

    Why no charge?

    Why so quick?

Something tellls me Barclays are frightened off us and the OFT so are changing from being so uncooropative?

Barclays haven't been charging for the statements for a long time. Some other banks also don't charge, some charge £5, and some are charging the full £10.

This makes no difference to the way they will treat your claim once you ask for the money back.

Some banks waive the charge, but as you have offered payment and requested under the Data Protection Act, the 40 day limit still applies.

I'm considering reclaiming my Bank charges with Barclays as I've not kept my account as 'tidy' as I should of since the birth of my Son almost three years ago (difficult to budget/went back to work part-time etc) so there's maybe 9/12 months when I've gone over my overdraft. I always shuffle money around as soon as I find out (checking online banking before they write to me!) and put myself back in overdraft. However! Am I REALLY entitled? Even though I've not been to great at keeping my account in check?
    Am sooooo confused!!
