It's not a problem reclaiming on business accounts.

    However..................

On certain types of accounts, you agree to pay a fee to get certain types of services with the account. In this case, you are paying £12 per quarter for this business account.

    You cannot reclaim this charge.

  • Hi i sent my letter to barclays today with a claim for charges and interest (had read it gives u more haggling possablilites) now i not sure as u guys all say not to should i be worried as the letter went today??
  • guess is too late as letter already gone now!!
  • Wouldn't worry Sbryant, it may just make them keener to settle out of court without the interest charges. Probably much of a muchness which letter you send to start with.

But it isn't anything I explicitly agreed to ... I have had business accounts since 1994. This £12 a quarter nonsense was introduced by a change of terms and conditions unilaterally applied in 2005 I think. That's new and I didn't agree to it and I have told them so. If they decide to cancel the account because I have told them I am not going to pay their fee then that's their prerogative, but I don't think they have a leg to stand on if they decide to keep it open like some kind of fishing net.

People generally seem so keen to accept the new line from banks and credit cards that "free" banking was a promotion and fees like that are the norm - utter bunkum. I have been with Barclays for my main current account and had a Barclaycard since 1975 and neither have ever applied a fee for just having the account open. That's over 30 years! I'd say therefore that free banking is the norm and fees are just a complete ruse...

And that £90 Premier fee I mentioned. Once upon a time it carried useful benefits. We paid a fee and received consideration in the form of the charge card itself (it seems to have metamorphosed into a kind of Barclaycard credit card now), a proper Annual Family Travel Policy, free reasonable on demand use of faxes, copiers and a desk at Barclays branches, free safety-deposit. The fee has crept up from around £70 to £90 over the years, but the benefits are long since left behind by stealthy changes to Ts&Cs...(in particular for the last few years, the travel insurance is so useless that few people could possibly ever rely upon it).
  • Peter you could always ask them to supply the paperwork you signed to agree to these charges, chances are they wont find them and will credit you back these anyway,

i heard something the other day about the charges on the personal accounts each month and complained to barclays, apologised in advance to them if they could provide the my signature on anything and today i logged on to my internet banking and they'd refunded a years charges, i was very happy@ that - they probably know i dont joke about now as ive got them in court next month!

doubt it! they'll offer you up to 50% and then you say no! they'll ignore the interest bit anyway! but i still got to add all that back on in my claim!

once your claims in the out of court settlement should be judged with the interest on - its up to you where you say ok!
  • I'm about to start this whole malarkey with Barclays (claiming £497!! That'd be nice...), but am in the same boat as many others. My o/d is about £1200, and there is no way I could pay it back if they want to close my account. What should I do?? Please some one answer this. Is there another bank I could take my o/d to, would any take me? Or if this happened would I have to go begging around for a loan?

    >>edited as I just realised I posted in the wrong thread - duh. Oh well, it'll do here, but I'll ask another question: has anyone had their Barclays account closed?
