Only you can answer the question.

It depends on what you feel comfortable accepting. If you need the money now and the amount they're offering is acceptable, take it. If you want the whole lot, the chances are you will get it, but you probably will have to file a court claim. This could mean a couple of months before you get your money.
  • Phone them and ask if they will return the charge if this is a first time charge.

Did and done. Was informed that cash machines work on 'yesterdays' balance. Great aint it? Their cash machines tell you you canwithdraw money only for them to charge you £30 when you go overdrawn. I hope the shareholders have a nice life.
This country is called Great Britain. It would be called Amazing Britain if it wasn't for people like you pulling the average down

Hi, just some advice needed please. i sent my bank, Barclays, a letter looking to reclaim £850 in bank charges from the last 6 years. i gave them 28 days to reply. the first letter i got said that the charges were written in the T&C's, yet they still offered me a 'good will gesture' of £200. i didn't accept, and wrote them another letter giving 14 days to reply. they then sent an offer of £600, which i received yesterday. i am just wondering whether i should accept this offer. i know its £250 less than i should receive but i've got a feeling i shouldn't push my luck. if i decline this and they then decide not to give me anything, i would kick myself because £600 would make a substantial effect to my overdraft at the moment. so basically i would like anyone's advice who has been through this before with similar circumstances. thanks for looking, shanesmummy.

What could you do with that £250 and what do you think the bank will do with it?

take a look at https://www.consumeractiongroup.com and register on the forum there, you will soon see that you are not 'pushing your luck', you are getting back what the bank has taken from you unlawfully. You will find all the resources you need and all the help you need. PM me when you get there :D

If the situation were reversed, what do you think Barclay's would do?

Plus, if you file a case against them, you get to add 8% interest to every charge from the date it was taken from your account. That will be a LOT more than £250 extra.

Stay strong and don't get pushed around. Unless you really want to.
  • Hi guys...

I haven't read through all the post (please forgive me, there are just so many!).

I'm currently attempting to claim back from Nationwide and Barclays. We have a new bank account now with neither of these banks.

Barclays didn't send me a nice list of charges but copies of statements for 6 years, there are LOADS. I don't know where to begin looking for charges.

Could someone please let me know the best way to seek out all of the charges? I'd be ever so grateful.

    Thank you,

    Vicki
  • Oh I think I have it - I look out for Paid Referral right?
  • Just received a ream of paper showing my account since 1999 from Barclays (they returned my £10 cheque too), had a quick scan and have seen several hundred quid in charges already, will grab a highlighter and notepad and start in earnest tomorrow, looks like a good few hours work! Hopefully well paid time though ;)
  • Last month I wrote to Barclays requesting 6 years back statements, in order to calculate how much in charges they had levied against my account. They sent me these very quickly, and free of charge (very generous of them!) and after a few days of wading through them I calculated they had taken just over £1,000 in paid referrals. I wrote and requested a refund and within a few days they replied with an offer of £423.00 as a 'goodwill gesture'. I am in the process of replying and requesting they up their offer, as I think 75% of the original amount requested would be a fair settlement. I have been with Barclays for over 30yrs, although I am sure that counts for little, and have recently settled my overdraft and have the account well in the black, although I had to plunder some savings to do that! If Barclays are not prepared to up their offer do they also have the right to withdraw the original offer of £423.00.

Just wondering did you send the SAR letter recorded or not? I sent mine first class only and am now wondering about its validity should the bank deny receiving it.

Yeah I sent it Special Delivery, I suppose it'd be too easy for the bank to misplace a letter if there was no proof of it arriving. I posted my request on the 28th Nov and received it all on the 8th Dec.
  • What's the best format for the charges? Handwritten list along with a copy of the original statements (highlighted) or should I plug the data into Excel?
