  • Hi, i was wondering if anyone could advise me about my situation:

4 years ago i was struggling so much to pay my bills, my mortgage was in arrears and i had over 20 grand in debt, i ended up selling my house moving abroad and settling most of the debts, foolishly i left some debts behind which after returning to England last month i have made contact with the debtors and made payment arrangements.

My problem is, during the years before moving abroad i was obviously getting charged by my bank and other lenders and i know i paid alot of money in charges, but i no longer have any reference to the bank accounts as they were all closed down when i moved abroad, is there anything i can do to find out my old banking details? I banked with HSBC and Barclays but not sure where to write to.

I would very much like to get some money back from the banks as i put some of the blame onto them for me being in the situation i was/am in.
  • i still have one other account with the bank, but closed my bills account last year. Can I still reclaim the charges??
  • Decline from Mint card to repay me my charges.

They said the charges are transparant, and totally avoidable. They also said they are against the the recommondation from the OFT.

What do i do now? Send the court letter or the one threating court action?

Has anyone been successful in claiming money from mint?
  • Firstly i'd like to thank Martin Lewis for bringing this to my (our) attention, secondly the people who are standing up for themselfs.

I've just had a reply from my old bank (of which i wont name for now as it may harm the case) saying they are looking into my case for claiming back charges after getting a final letter from the small claims court that i filed for.

The thing i am worried about is the fact that i closed my accout with this bank about 1 year ago. Charges to my account were made about 5 years ago and im going on the fact that i was still unlawfully charged at that time.

Does anyone know if i still stand a chance?

Thanks for all feedback, good luck to all those that are going through with it - POWER 2 THE PEOPLE!
  • can anyone tell me if i can can claim back charges from my previous bank account??? thanx!

Yes you can claim on old/closed accounts. Send the DPA letter asking for all information/statements on the account giving your name, any relevant addresses and your date of birth to aid them trying to find your account.

Obviously if you have the account number and sort code of the bank this will be even better.
  • It's my wifes old account. As a student she ended up with barclays and with a barclaycard. Due to charges etc over the three years on both the account and the CC, she ended up taking out a £5000 loan to clear them and close both accounts. I reckon the £5000 was actually about £3000 worth of charges and I'm loath to just forget about it. She's got no details left as she threw all the paperwork a couple of years ago. How could we go about getting the information? Can anyone help?

    Hiya

I opened a joint account for a previous boyfriend 4 years ago as he couldn't get a bank account. He then got an overdraft of £750.00 and spent the lot. Obviously I didn't have a clue about all this until cheques were bouncing and the rent wasn't getting paid. I threw him out and took the bank on and explained situation. I had to end up paying half of the money that was left in the overdraft £375.00 and then i closed it.
I have today sent the first letter to them asking for the statements.
If they give back all the charges will the ex get any of the money back to him or as i have made the recovery steps will I receive all the charges back?
Just need to know as I won't pursue if the ex will benefit from it!!

Thanks again for all your help and support, you're wonderful

I am new to all this - very scary
My question is i closed my bank account with the Halifax last year because they would not give me a current account even though i had Direct debits and my wages going in every month. I was with them for about 7 yrs. I opened a current account with RBOS no problem. I want to claim back all the charges i had with my old Halifax account and wondered if this was possable even though it is now closed. I still have all the details of the account ect..

Go for it! As far as I can make out there is no reason why you can't follow the procedure laid out on the website against Halifax.

    Best wishes, busyj
