Welcome to the Reclaim Bank Charges Board

This is such a massive subject for MoneySavers I decided it was time that Reclaiming Bank Charges had its own Board. I hope this will mean MoneySavers work together to help each other take on the banks and share their experiences.

Tomorrow, 13 November, my new guide to reclaiming bank charges will be on the site. It's been a massive piece of work - its a true 'step-by-step' easy to do piece of work and includes template letters and calculators. Therefore this board is really to coincide with that.

  • Welcome to everyone, old and new to this shiny new board, its very exciting :j

In the next couple of days I'll try and tidy up some of the threads to make sure the questions are in the correct threads so they don't get lost.

Feel free to ask your questions and hopefully someone will be able to help you process your claim smoothly.
  • Welcome to Rex Mundi as Board Guide on Reclaim Your Bank Charges!

Once Martin's article is up and running we will all have more of a feel of where posts will go etc. A new discussion thread will probably be started coming from the new article and its looking like each bank will have its own question and answer thread so please do a search for your specific bank before starting a new thread.

    :)
  • Please bare with us while we get everything up and running. I am still moving threads across into this board but I won't be merging older threads unless they are brought back up for any reason.

When posting your question can you please put the name of the bank you are claiming from into the title then we can easily find a suitable thread where possibly your question has already been answered.

Hopefully where suitable we will have dedicated threads running for the major banks where MSE users who have already claimed will be able to help new users with their questions. As I might add they are already doing :T
  • Well I don't know who Kev is, but I feel just like him tonight :j
  • There doesn't appear to be any information relating to adverse credit history caused by these charges (i.e. when a bank has defaulted the account holder or issued a CCJ).

Are you going to let people know that this information can (and should) also be challenged?
  • during the years of '99 to April '03 I was unmercifully charged by the halifax, barclays and royal bank of scotland. At which point i went bankrupt. i was discharged from my bankruptcy in April '05. If I left these banks unpaid because of my bankruptcy would I still be able to claim against them. I still feel bitter against them as I feel they was a contributing factor to my bankruptcy!
  • A warm welcome to any readers of Martin's article in the Sun :D

I hope you can find the information you are looking for and that MSE users can help you with your reclaim of bank charges.

Please have a look round the rest of MSE and sign up for the weekly email while you are here :)
  • You might be pleased to hear LloydsTSB have set up and are paying a whole staff team to take on the volume of claims against their charges. Quoted from a LloydsTSB staff member as I handed your templated letter in person, and in front of a handful of customers. (i wanted to ask a manager there if this could be done amicably and as quickly as possible, but apparantly the managers don't have the clearance to authorize such a request) Also, the receptionist didn't know what I was talking about, saying a charge is a charge... Until I mentioned the legality of the charge being disproportional for sending a letter out. Then she suddenly knew all about it.

As a side note, I've been figuring this topic might open the floodgates to many other types of charges being claimed back... I was charged £40 to have my old phone number moved to a new address with the same phone company. I watched the desk jockey as she did this in front of me. She drag and dropped it...
    LoL
Just switching the auto assigned phone number of my new address with my old one. So, I paid £40 for a drag and drop process? Does this have similar qualities to my bank charges? (yes, I'm currently reclaiming about £700 from LloydsTSB) Or am I just thinking too hard and am paying for a service, rather than a charge?
    LoL
Would be nice to hear of any other 'uses' to this fantastic advice. Thanks Martin.
  • Hi all
I`ve took my bank to court for over a grand of charges for the last six years.
They had until the 21st of Nov to reply. It`s now midday on the 21 st, do I wait until midnight and then ask the court to enter a judgement or just hang on till I recieve something??
Also I still have an account that is £1100 OD which I am currently not using having changed banks to get control of my money for debt management. Can the bank dictate that if I win and they have to pay me that i use the money to clear that account or can I decide where the money is paid???
  • Hi all,
I am a small retail shop only four years old and I have been trying for nine months to reclaim charges and RBS say that the OFT have only put pressure on them for personal accounts and biz charges are justified. Unfair is unfair dont you agree. If any one can offer any similar expieriences I'd appreciate your comments
