    with the fresh sim, what happens if you never use it or if you use the credit and dump the sim? do the 60p monthly charges just keep getting added on(waiting for next topup)?

    at some point this would become a big debt with potential problems. or do you have to cancel rather than dump?

    thank you.

    I was with easymobile because of their 5p text message rate, as I am deaf and do not make any voice calls. I happily paid 75p charge on ocassion which worked out better than the various packages other companies offer which include discounted calls.

    I noticed with Fresh, although they are 3p, it does mention that if you do not make any calls in 90 days your account will be closed. Does that apply even if I made 100 text messages in 90 days but no calls? I also need to be able to check my balance by text as well as online, which I could do with easymobile.

    Have looked at other companies and am struggling a little with their info. Any ideas?

    My sister and her husband are Deaf: they've been with Virgin Mobile for years, as are most of their friends. (You can text Virgin to Virgin for 3p.)

    My sister and brother in law have never made nor received voice calls and have had no problem with that. They have never been cut off nor threatened with it.

    My sister did write to Virgin to let them know that she is Deaf, as she wanted to authorise me to phone Virgin (from my own phone) on her behalf. She only did this just in case there was ever a problem with her account and needed to contact a customer service advisor in a hurry. Virgin were so friendly and understanding about this. After some thorough security precautions, I got a password for her account. You can also email their customer services - I've sometimes done that for my own account, but it can take a day or so to receive a reply. Unfortunately, you can't check your balance by text, but you can do it online. I've taken it up with Virgin, but haven't had any success so far - checking your balance by text really ought to be made available. Maybe more people could contact them about it?

    When she was with T-Mobile a few years back, I think they had a special department that could give advice to Deaf and Blind people, and she found them helpful too.

    Texting is HUGE among all the Deaf people that I know, and mobile companies would be daft to miss out on such a big chunk of custom!

    To all those interested in international texting......

    I use an outfit called https://www.vgsmail.com and have doen for a while. It changed ownership recently but still seems to be a non-profit venture. I just send texts from the website (to Russia). no spam, nothing added to the texts and you can do loads more stuff. the cost - 4.2p a text, no points - no fuss.

    I'm with 3 so can't take advantage of what might be most useful to you (wap to sms). The option to convert call credit to text credits also might be very useful at the minute.
    Vgsmail is a non-profit making internet-to-SMS gateway. We aim to provide SMS at bulk rates to the individual as well as the small business. The vgsmail SMS centre provides the following features:

    * Wap-to-SMS - Java Midlet client that allows you to send SMS from your mobile phone WAP; (The Wap cost is around 0.1p/message even on Vodafone,O2,T Mobile,Virgin, Orange prepay phone. It does not work on H3G due to their wall garden policy.). Considering the operators charges around 20p - 30p/msg and you can do the same via VGSMail for around 4.2p (That is a 80% saving).

    # Low cost UK and International text messaging with no minimum usage requirement;
    # Delayed timing of messages (e.g. set a message to go on a birthday);
    # Web-to-SMS;
    # Email-to-SMS;
    # Java midlet SMS client;
    # RSS Feed forwarding;

    * Receive headline news, traffic news, web-site status, blog entries;
    * Receive topical updates such as Big Brother, sporting events;
    * Forward them to your Instant Messenger client (MSN, Yahoo, AOL, ICQ);
    * SMS them to your phone when you are offline.

    # New email notification for your current email account;
    # Return path is maintained: recipients of your messages will be able to reply to them just as for messages sent directly from your phone;
    # Simple http-to-SMS provision for incorporation into your own web-page or application;
    # MSN Messenger, Yahoo!, Jabber, ICQ or AIM to SMS gateway;
    # Two-way SMS from MSN Messenger;
    # Convert free calling plan minutes (UK only) into SMS credits [using QXDial+].
  • OK, so here I am with a new phone thru Easymobile & have been relatively satisfied although the coverage was poor down in my neck of the woods (Devon). I've read all the info you great lot have put here & also perused the various web sites & have come to the conclusion that Tesco is probably my best bet unless someone wants to point out the error of my ways. All I wanted was a phone to use for emergencies & a few txt messages (kids cant talk!!), I dont need it abroad & no-one wants to send me picture messages so I reckoned the £3.47 for the sim card (& since I want to retain my old number I get £5 call credit) well worth doing. I've checked & have requested my PAC number; have also applied to Easy to unlock my phone (which according to their web site they will do FOC) so now i take it I just sit back & wait. The added bonus to me Is that I believe Tesco calls are piggybacked onto O2, which has great coverage around here. So come on all you expert - where have I gone wrong, or haven't I?

    You can get that with Tesco at 40p a minute and 40p a text. It's a lot more expensive AFAIK with T Mobile. I saw £1 a minute on their website.

    Thanks Caixta for that info.

    I have decided to go with Tesco as their package has no charges (unlike easymobile and freshmobile), can check bal online or bt text and is 5p a message and they have offered me a free sim card deal.

    T-mobile did offer a good package (as far as I could see) offering 3p texts, but could only check bal online and not by text.

    I did look at Virgin, especially as I knew from yu that they were a good company service wise, but as I do not know anyone else on the virgin network, it was going to be 10p a message instead. A pity as I have the exact same problems re telephone calls and security/id. I often get my dad to make my calls, but I wish he had a female voice to then just pretend he is me!!! Would be so much easier!!

    Thanks again!
  • Has anyone who request the porting code to keep your number actually got it yet?????

    I requested it at the weekend and am still waiting. Want to get sorted out with new provider.

    If you get a lot of Voicemail messages Virgin do not charge to them access them everyone else does!!!

    Also if you make intl calls their rates to 0844/0845/0870/0871 gateway numbers are good.

    0845 10p a minute.

    0844/0870/0871 15p a minute.
