If you have little ones then spend as little as you can get away with while you can.
Son 19 is getting a DVD/mp3/Divx...blah blah head set for his car. Retails at £500, luckily we got it from ebay for £150. He's getting other bits as well, but not much.
Son 15 is getting a set of weights, £100 (It'll end up more) for clothes and bits of stuff. He has had a laptop this year and a holiday costing £800!
They have had clothes for Christmas and Birthdays since they were about 12/13. But we live in a very techy household and they tend to get techy stuff all year round, so the oposite to most people.0 -
Well I have three (17, 2 and 9mths)
For the 17yr old about 6 items of designer clothing all great buys from e bay. Also a wallet, CD and DVD all reduced. cost £80
DD (2) Dora the bloody explorer (feel brainwashed by this) duvet set (ebay), doll, characters, other toys from Asda spend about £70
DS NOTHING!!! I feel its madness buying a baby pressies. He'll be happy with the wrapping paper
Merry Christmas to you all0 -

Couldn't agree more - they'll be bleeding you dry soon enough. Personally, I can't remember a single thing I got before the age of 5.
The more you give, the bigger the expectations next year, so don't go making a rod for your own back.0 -
I can't believe how many people are judging and criticising what people are spending their money on. It's their money, they're their children, it's their choice. The original post was asking for ideas, not inviting everyone to have a go at each other's decisions. Some of you are soooooooooooo sanctimonious!
And to criticise someone for giving money to a children's ward at Christmas???!******** Never be a spectator of unfairness or stupidity *******"Always be calm and polite, and have the materials to make a bomb"0 -
4 year old wants a scooter (9.99 sportsworld) have loads of stuff i've bought in sales/charity shops over past year so will probably end up keeping some back!! books, games (buckaroo from tesco glitch & some 2nd hand) etc.
was just gonna get 13 month old little touch leappad (he keeps pinching his brother's big one!) but was 18.50 in boots & they had 3 for 2 on toys so also got 2 other half price things - was triple points & had 300 points on 30 pound spend so made it up with nappies!! also gave in & got the pooh bear story teller reduced at argos but mum has bought that off me to give him! far too much i know. i keep quiet in school playground tho as lots of 4 & 5 year old sare getting x boxes etc & are having about 400 pounds each spent on them (by parents that say they cant afford school dinners so will be sending sandwiches next year). less than 100 quid the lot i think.Cleaning the house while children are growing is like shovelling snow when it's still snowing!0 -
i bought a book case for the baby (16m so not really a baby) and people say i'm mean lol! it's a tidybooks not an ordinary one and it will be fab for him. plus, it can go behind the door because it's only 7cm deep and gets fixed to the wall. our tiny house is already full so getting him toys means getting rid of what he's already got and he plays with everything he has and loves it all so why replace it? £95 for a book case is not me being mean, and although we've bought him toys i really don't think he needs a pile of them. putting his books into this case means he can use his book box for his new christmas toys so he's a winner really. i don't know what people are moaning about, i don't think he will ever think 'my mean parents didn't get me much for christmas when i was little' !52% tight0

Oh I can. I remember presents from very young. My favourite from when I was 3 was my desk and chair. I also remember my sweet shop and my doll Sheena with a purple lurex trouser suit and hair that you could wind up and down
DD (11) hasn't asked for anything for Xmas as she says there is nothing she wants. We have bought her a big present as a surprise (not saying what it is as she reads the boards!). Cost about £105 with various discounts. Aside from that she has the usual suspects some bought cheaply in the sales throughout the year.~Laugh and the world laughs with you, weep and you weep alone.~:)

My DH's Gran buys a crazy amount for our 4 kinders. Her idea of a Christmas stocking is a black bin bag!! She also gives me money to buy presents that they would like.
I've stopped getting stressed about it and appreciate the fact that it takesz the pressure off me.
I tend to buy them one well thought out present each ( we don't do Santa)
So:
DD12: Britney Spears Curious perfume from Superdrug, can 't remember exactly how much but less than a tenner and then 10% off.
DD11: A couple of books probably.
DS9: Return of the hundred mile an hour dog.. and an xbox game.
DD8: An outfit for her baby Annabel. Bought from Argos when 25% off. £14.99.
I think you should spend what you can afford and want to spend.
I would personally just buy for their birthdays and give to charity at Christmas, but I mat wait a few years before I start that!!0 -
