if you're going to see your GP to confirm you're pregnant, they do very little I'm afraid. Mine just looked at my test I'd brought in, said yes its positive, when was your first day of your last period, ok go and make a midwife appt for when your ten weeks, that was it! I was in there about 2 mins! Oh and the receptionist gave me a bounty pack.0

Ditto to what missymoo said. I had a few questions about medication, and exposure to chicken pox (!), but there wasn't a lot to do. My GP is fab though, she knew we'd been trying for *ages* and was happy for us. She gave estimated due date, answered my questions, weighed me (as I was asking about continuing dieting while PG), and gave me my giant notes that we have to carry around for 8 months (does everyone have to do this...yikes!)
For our pics, we were told that we had to pay £5 on the day, but then we weren't charged. I signed up for a study that the hospital is running, so had some other things to do after the scan, so I suspect they just forgot.
Kira, I really think it's important for mums to do what they feel best, so if you really want a hospital birth then definitely push for the "good" hospital. Don't let your stats throw you off home birth though, if you're interested. The midwives here do a good job of looking at each case individually. I just turned 40 a few days before conceiving the bean, and was about 45 lbs overweight (about 30 now). As long as everything progresses normally (no pre-eclampsia, breech baby, diabetes, etc.), the midwife said I'm not really at any higher risk than a 20 year old. The risk is that I have higher odds of developing those problems in the first place. Anyway...good luck with getting a place that makes *you* feel comfortable.Pick battles big enough to matter, small enough to win. - Jonathan Kozol0 -
I didn't have a gp appointment.
I rang the surgery they said to ring the midwife gave me the number and I rang them and they sent a booking appointment through for 9 weeks.
On the occasion I did see the doc she didn't want to see a test, she gave me the number and said ring the midwife.. oh.. they routinely ask if you want a termination or to keep the baby and if you have been taking folic acid.. and want to know when your last period started as they calculate due date from that.. (9 months plus 7 days if you want to do it yourself?)

question:
What do people think about home births, although it is my first one, I think I would quite like one, I said at the midwife appt that I would like it to be at the hospital, but the more I think about it the more I would like it to be at home. Is this advised for the first pregnancy and what are the risks is there a website I can look at?0 -

I did actually sleep last night, but feel like I could sleep for a week still, honestly don't think I have ever been this tired, really not good!
Anyone else have no enthusiasm at all for work at the moment, I just feel like it is pointless me being there, am really not enjoying it and would just quite like to spend the whole day in bed!! Honestly I'm not a lazy cow!:D
I've got absolutely no interest in work at the moment, I think it's because I am just so tired and have got no energy. I'm getting nothing done at home and feel like I've got a constant hangover.glittermonster wrote: »How much has everyones hospital charged for scan pics? Mine charges £6 per print!!!
Flippin 'eck!! That's a money maker for the hospital. How much do they charge for parking - £10 per hour??cloudberry45 wrote: »Hi again, sorry to pester

My GP basically said 'congratulations now go an make an appointment with the midwife'. In and out within 2 minutes I think!
I had my 1st midwife appointment this afternoon and she seemed really nice. Got my Bounty pack, a big file of notes to carry 'everywhere' (which is not realistic), a few other leaflets and booklets for bedtime reading. I had to give 2 urine samples and she took what must have been a pint of blood from me  Ive got an appointment to go back and see her at 16 weeks and I'm waiting for my scan appointment to come through the post.
We've decided to have the blood test for Down's Syndrome, even though we've discussed that if it comes back high risk I won't have any invasive tests such as amnio or CVS. Midwife never mentioned Nuchal scan though, is this something that is done as procedure or do you have to request it?
I've got a meeting with my manager at work tomorrow to review my risk assessment. I wonder if I can have it written in that I need a cat nap 12.30 - 2.30pm every day because I could really do with one!0 -

I personally wouldn't have a home birth or a birth at a midwife led unit for a first baby. My main concern would be if there were complications that caused distress to the baby you then have to wait for an ambulance, and then be transferred to hospital. All that time you would be highly anxious and the baby could be at risk. I personally don't think it's worth the risk. If I'd already had a child and had had no issues during the birth I would probably feel more confident about a home birth or a midwife led unit, but then I'm a bit of a worrier.
Our local hospital maternity unit became midwife led last year, so we will be going to a hospital outside our locality, we have 2 to choose from. All all our ante natal care will be done at the local hospital though, plus if I need to stay in hospital following the birth I can be transferred to our local hospital for post natal care.0 -

Pigpen - I know where the machine is I used to look at it longingly as i used to have my diabetes/ttc appointments in the Women and Children's lol.
At my GP appointment I said I've taken 2 tests and they're both positive so yey I'm pregnant she said ooh congratulations took my medical history (as there's a lot) and prescribed me folic acid due to medical history and told me she'd refer me to midwives etc. This was a Locum Dr but I asked specifically for a female Dr as my usual Dr is male. I got my notes through the post along with my midwife appointment. I got my bounty pack at the midwife appointment.0 -
Welcome Mimi! Congratulations!
I used to think I'd prefer a Hospital birth but I wouldn't oppose to a home birth but now I don't have a choice and I'm happy with that!
At the 12 week scan I didn't have the NT testing, I was just given my due date. I was asked at the midwife appointment whether I wanted the testing and we opted out.0
