^ what LittleMoog said. I was fine with the 5 vials they took the first time, didn't hurt at all but it bruised like mad the next day for some reason, but the next time I went it was only 1 vial and I felt faint!! If you are worried ask them to take it lying down and make sure you don't look, I'd also eat something not too long before.
  • Helpful tips guys, I think the midwife is coming to mine on Monday so if she does the blood then, I can lie down and relax afterwards. I can't wait, even though I know it's a boring appointment!
  • I was also nervous about the bloods Sparkles as I can get a bit queasy but I just looked away and she kept chatting to me and I was fine, in fact-she said I was a very good girl!lol

Hi Claire, I have regular blood tests due to my thyroid condition, and I.don't find them too bad - my flu and whooping cough vaccines a few weeks ago were much worse.

2 top tips - make sure you've had plenty to drink so your veins are easy to find, and close your eyes/look away the whole time after they put the tourniquet on. they use a vacutainer system with vials that pop in and out while the needle stays in, but it doesn't hurt once it's in, and 5 vials or 1 makes no difference in my experience. Hth xx

Omg a tourniquet!! I had no idea although that prob sounds stupid saying that I think I just thought they stuck a needle in for a while? Thanks for the tips though! I'd much rather have a jab so it's interesting you say they were worse.

Yes, they put an elastic tourniquet around your upper arm to make the veins more visible - may also ask you to make a fist/pump your fingers. Once they find a vein they put the needle in and pop the vials on and off the holder to fill them. They normally release the tourniquet during the last vial, and then remove the needle and pop a bit of cotton wool over for you to hold while they label vials etc. Once that's done they check you're not bleeding excessively and stick the cotton wool on with some tape. You can take it off after a couple of hours. Apart from the initial needle (sharp scratch) I've never found it painful, and just look away the whole time!

Erm....I'm almost with you on that stupid line of thought (so its not as stupid as you think - or maybe we are both a bit stupid!!!) :D Whilst I realised they would get some blood - I didn't realise that they would be getting several vials - I thought they would only get one - I have now been imagining the sound as they change over to the next one - OMG!!!! I am having my first blood test at the scan next week and am now dreading the "vials" bit - I imagined that that it was just a normal blood test with say a 10 second "fill-up" (which already makes me feel queasy) but sounds like it goes on a bit! And I hate people trying to distract me by talking to me - as I can barely talk as all I can think about is the blood!!!!:eek:

They only took three vials from me and, tbh, you don't notice it (and this is coming from the biggest cry baby in the world).

I had everything tested btw and I've had my results.

I feel lied to at the mo as I am struggling to keep things down. I don't do vom!!!! I'm currently in bed with a bucket! Very chic!

I've told my sister and it took her three days to plan baby's wardrobe for the next three years. She has also, against my wishes, started to buy things.

A friend told me that I've popped. I thought popping meant that your belly button popped out but, no, I have an ickle bump. I have had to buy a few maternity tops. Maternity clothes shopping isn't fun btw as hardly any shops stock nice clothes.
  • Snozberry (love your username by the way!) - have you tried New Look online? I've managed to get some jeans, bras and a swimming costume from them but in-store was rubbish. I love my fatty jeans, normal ones were starting to dig in and I'm only 9+2 so I wonder if I've popped. OH told his mum last night and her partner said he did wonder the other day as I looked "rounder" in the tummy but not the face or anywhere :D First time I've been happy to be called fat :D

Things aren't too good in the Sparkles' house today though, poor OH has chicken pox so am staying away as much as possible until I've spoken to the midwife tomorrow, so packing an overnight bag for my mums tonight :(

If you are after tops that suit a bump - go to Yours Clothing (online or the shop) - for larger ladies - but great for maternity stuff too. I went in on Friday after work and bought a floaty top - loads of choice. Elasticated trousers too and the most comfy leggings around.

I've had a bump since 6-7 weeks buts it a bloat bump!

Snozberry - when did you start being sick? I am thinking about my liklihood at 11.5 weeks..... no vomit yet and today was the first morning that i didn't gag brushing my teeth.....heres hoping! I hope you feel better soon - I am worried that my symptoms are starting to go.....:(

I am now also on Vimto - sugar free cordial on offer in Asda - cherry is scrummy! Also their ice lollies - OMG! I have just eaten 2 and about to eat my third!!!:o

My toothbrush made me vomit the other week (can't remember the day - think it was Monday). I was sick Exorcist stylie yesterday and I'm 12+6.

My bump is different to the bloating bump that I had. It's hard and I have a little shelf below my boobs.
