  • Hi Maclurky - congratulations - The time seems to move so slowly the first few weeks - i've been on here from 5 weeks and seems like a lifetime - am 11 weeks now and looking forward to making it onto the next forum

At the start i was soo tired i could have slept 24 hours a day - thankfully that has passed and i only have a bit of sickness to contend with now. It's all good though and is a ral help having other going through the same to ask questions or get reassurance and that what you are feeling is perfectly normal

    Is this your first baby?

Welcome maclurky! I've only been here about a week but, as others are saying, it seems that many joined at 4-6 weeks. I'm about 5+1 or 2 now, and hoping that this thread will help keep me sane in those weeks (eek weeks!) before the first midwife visit.

Have any of you that have been to the doc/midwife been given advice about peanuts? The NHS' advice now seems to be to eat them, as long as you're not allergic. This has just changed in the past maybe 3-4 years though. My nanny charge's mum, for instance, was told to avoid them and not to give them to the kiddo until she was 3! We gave them to her a good bit earlier, once we thought there wasn't a choking hazard. We don't have any history of peanut allergies in either of our families, but my side has lots of hay-fever/seasonal type allergies, including myself, which used to be one of the criteria for not eating them. I read though, that some studies suspect that NOT eating peanuts could have the opposite result intended (that is, increasing sensitivity to peanuts). I have a mild latex allergy as well, but that's a whole other post in and of itself. :p

Jen I have a major latex allergy and it is vile.. I get a rash, I wheeze and my tongue swells.. pee's me off though cos I luffs bananas and they kill me. :( I've never been told to not eat peanuts and my sister has a nut allergy.. They are a choking risk to small children which is why they advise they don't have them. If you want peanuts.. go eat them.. there are traces in almost everything anyway.. and full of protein so really quite good for you. I think it is more about being sensible and not putting yourself at risk.. eating soft cheese that has been out on the the side for 2 hours in summer as oppose to fresh from the fridge.. most stuff is fine and the 'guidelines'.. not laws.. do not mean that a mouthful of fresh brie will instantly kill you, the baby and next doors cat it just means be sensible about it.. most processing of food will kill off harmful bugs. 2 day old rice reheated makes you very very very ill.. other than that.. if you want it and it doesn't talk back.. eat it. lol runny eggs are fine if they have the red lion stamp as they are vaccinated flocks.. shop bought mayo is made with pasteurised egg so fine (fresh homemade stuff with raw egg is not only minging but not advised) ricotta cheese is fine..

pigpen, thanks for the reply. The latex issue is one of the things that I'm going to ask the doctor about. Bananas are my main trigger too, though I can eat them if they are cooked. There are a few other foods that I occasionally have trouble with, but that I don't actively avoid. These less-reactive foods (mango, chestnut, carrot and peppers), I only avoid if I take a bite and there's a problem though I'm not sure if this is ok during pregnancy. Normally, I would think I'd die if I couldn't have mango, but the past couple of weeks, I've gone off most anything sweet, except orange juice for some reason, which I've been drinking loads of.

Hubby and I are both vegan, so most of the no-no foods are things we don't eat anyway, whew. I know what you mean about being sensible. It's different now thinking about keeping bean safe. If we left some food out on the counter a bit long, or maybe weren't quite sure about something, I might chance it, but now, my common sense is kicking in. :)

  • Hi Jen, my OH has a major nut allergy and when I was pregnant with my son (10 years ago) I was told to avoid them (not a problem as I hate nuts!) but my midwife told me the other day that this advice has changed, and I could eat them if I wanted to. She also gave me lots of advice about what I could & couldn't eat so hopefully you'll get the same at your booking-in appointment :)

Welcome MacLurky, I also joined the thread at about 4 weeks and am now almost 10 weeks. It's so good to have these lovely ladies to talk to about it all when you're keeping schtum in real life xxx :D
  • Evening all

Hope everyones weekend has been as nice as mine has. Brother came to stay and i enjoyed the catch up. Exhausted now though. Boo

If I wasn't so early on I would have sworn blind I felt a kick earlier.

Anyone got any good tips to get rid of the constant bloating and general sluggishness? This pregnancy has really really affected me. I dont recall feeling like this last time. I hope everythings okay...
