Fair enough but a lot of people are not necessarily reading this thread and choosing purely on price without realising the consequences. As for your second point, the vast majority of people on anything but the basics package will have a line speed <8meg. Therefore the only thing that will be affected will be P2P, nothing more.
If they have come off the old Standard package that is probably true. Some however have swapped off the old Premium package with speeds of up to 20meg available before. Most people don't want or use P2P and just want a cheap broadband package. That is exactly what I have got @ £6.25 per month.
I have got the Standard legacy package for 6 months free and 6 months at £9.50 so £4.75pm.0 -
I think Jem16 is right to point out the traffic management aspect - o2 don't always do this.
And people can be totally oblivious about what it means and have only found out after the event when the switch has been completed and there is no going back.
I am sure there are a fair few who are regretting it but having said that the all rounder and works deals will suffice for plenty as well - especially at 12 months free.0 -

Not everyone downloads loads of torrents so don't care.
This "point" is of no interest (and therefore "boring") only to people who have taken the o2 "shilling" and signed up to one of the new traffic managed packages (some of whom have admitted they didn't realise what they had done till too late!)
Anyone coming to this thread late won't be reading the full thread, so the catch in going for the first o2 bribe instead of hanging out for a retention deal on the "old" packages does need keeping current!
And your comment wrongly suggests that it is only those who "downloads loads of torrents" who are affected by the shaping!
If jem 16 bores you, then just ignore the posts! Others will be grateful that the catch you fell for has been pointed out to them before it's too late!0 -
Just phoned o2 to cancel my account. I was on the old 'Standard' tariff and didn't want to move to one of the new Basics / All Rounder / Works (traffic managed) packages. I was going to move to Sky but to be honest, I've been happy with o2 so was reluctant to leave.
Anyway, I was initially offered the £2.50 per month discount on signing up to a new 12 month contract. When I said that this wasn't good enough, the lady on the phone put me on hold for about a minute whilst she went to talk to her 'manager'. She came back and offered me the 6 months free deal.
More than happy!0 -
I obviously spoke to the wrong person initially. He only offered me 3 month free moving to the Works package and wouldn't offer me anything more so I requested my MAC.
Decided I would try again, spoke to a new person 3 days later saying I had already been offered 6 months free staying on my current package, but the person said that I could go away and think about it. Well it worked and the guy said no problem, signed me up to another 12 months, 6 months free, staying on Premium.0 -
Wanted to give my experience with O2 retentions and add a cautionary tale for anyone with low connection speeds like me who may be tempted to switch to a new package. Some comments recently have suggested that it's only heavy downloaders or P2P users who would lose out if they did that.
Just got off the phone with O2 retentions after researching the information in this thread (thanks everyone for really useful contributions).
I'm on the legacy standard package, used to get the O2 mobile £5 discount but don't use that phone any more. Accepted the £5 discount to stay on current package for 12 months, so it will drop from £12.77p.m. to £9.50 when the increases take effect.
The O2 lady mentioned the option of moving to a new package (Basic?) for less money, when I told her I'm a long way from the exchange so high speed isn't an issue (I only get 4Mb download) but I watch a lot of BBC iPlayer in the evenings she immediately said 'oh then the Basics package will not be any good for you'. When I asked if that was because of the traffic management she said yes.
Admittedly, I'm probably borderline in terms of connection speed (standard def. iPlayer is OK but HD keeps freezing) but bandwidth throttling wasn't mentioned until I raised it.
Buyer beware!0 -
Im on the Home Premium (Legacy) Package which is increasing to £13.00 per month, I renewed my contract in January this year and got an extra £2.50 discount each month.
What are my options before I contact 02 Retentions0 -
Read through this thread and you'll see lots of us have reported the (various) options that have been offered.
Note that if you take a new contract they give you a cooling off period but this doesn't mean you can revert to your old arrangement (only that you can cancel the new one)0 -
Was on month 5 of 12 month contract. With the first 6 months free, so just havent paid for any of the 5 months.
Called them up yestoday managed to get 12 months free on the works package, new router and any time landline package. I pay like 13.50 for the anytime landline but 12 months free internet work out brilliant, especially as I use to paid 13.50 with my old landline provider just for the landline.
cheers o20 -
Also got 12 months free broadband(The Works top package):beer:0
