I was reading my baby book the other day and hearing women's stories of labours. This one woman said 'I was pleased I'd managed to endure at least part of my labour with no pain relief'. It really got me thinking. Why?? Why is it more 'impressive' to go through labour without pain relief? Why do people boast about 'Ooh, I only had gas and air' and everyone nods in approval? Why do we expect women to be stoical during what can be an incredibly traumatic time. It hurts having a baby! What other painful experience can you imagine (e.g. breaking a bone, suffering with gallstones pain) where you're applauded if you 'get through it' with no pain relief?? It's bizarre! Not to mention barbaric.
You don't get a medal for managing labour without pain relief. It doesn't make you a better mother. It's about time we woke up to the fact that any experience is a valid one, and every birth where you and your baby arrive the other side safely is a success. We're not failures if we want a epidural, !!!!!!.
If I could thank this twice I would
DH said he talking to a customer at work earlier, this chap was talking about his wife who has recently given birth - and how it was a 'fantastic birth' and how she 'did it the proper way' with no pain relief. Erm, hello?! Aaaah  Makes me so mad!

Hey all
Sorry, can't multi-quote! Hope you are feeling a bit better Rebekah - can you chat to your DH about it all?
Regarding bumps, I still think I look just look fat but people tell me its a definate bump. I'm not convinced - wish I had of been slim to start with22 weeks tomorrow - time is just zooming by!
I had been feeling pretty miserable - I started getting these awful shooting pains from bum to my shoulder on Tuesday night which meant I barely slept. Got a bit panicy and so went to GP on Wednesday. For now I've got pain killers and have to go back tomorrow in case its anything more serious than pregnancy aches, but to be honest they do seem to have subsided quite a bit. I also got very emotional and weepy with the doctor - I was very tired! - and she advised me to take rest of week of work.
So like I said, I had been feeling pretty miserable - and then our travel system arrived by courier today (along with some other bits we bought off ebaby - and its absolutely beautiful! :T
Hope everyone is well

Student_Mrs - I think the test you are referring to is the nuchal fold one for Downs. This is a scan and bloods but needs to be done between 11 and 13+6. this is where they measure the fold on the back of the neck and combine it with the bloods. I think they do differ in areas and there's another one that's offered at 16 weeks but I think this is just a blood test. I don't know what the name of this one is but I would suspect that is the one you will be getting by your description. Hope that makes sense xxDS1 born June 2000

Yes we will be here long term. Great place to raise a child and there are so many activities and centres aimed at them. Kids are a huge business. Our local mall has a huge area where they can learn ice hockey/ice skating, roller balding, kung fu, music, art, languages and so on. That just the tip of the iceberg.
I still need to get my head round the nationality issue. Britain will recognise the dual nationality, China will not.
As we will live in China we will register them as Chinese. When they are older and may want to travel or live elsewhere they will have the choice to apply for a British passport.
They can hold both passports, but the logistics of using them both is complicated.Spring Fesitval Challenge: Save health & money! Day 1/7

If you're having the down's syndrome bloods done after 13+6 then you won't get a scan. The one that includes a measurement of the nuchal translucency (fluid at back of baby's neck) has to be done between 11 weeks and 13+6 so if it's after that then it's just blood tests. If it come back high risk they don't scan, you are given the option of having further tests done that can tell you for definate if the baby has a cromosonal defect (down's, Edward's or Patau's). The tests are either the CVS or amniocentisis, CVS can be done straight away but with amniocentisis you have to wait until 16 weeks. Both carry a slightly increased risk of miscarriage (1-2% chance). If you opt not to have either of these tests done then there are certain things they MIGHT be able to see on the 20 week scan which are called 'soft markers', however, this isn't a definitive way of diagnosing downs so if whether thet are seen or not you still don't know if baby has it until its born.
I think you'll probably be able to tell from how much I know about it that my result was high risk!! I personally opted to have the CVS test and luckily it came back that baby was fine.
Just rememember, many, many more people get low risk results than high risk ones.0 -
hi all, hope all ok. glad to see everyone has been getting some bargains in. I haven't bought any baby bits yet, just clothes for me that were so cheap it would be rude not to!
Fishcake- I feel your pain. I had a traumatic birth very similar to yours and think I was very close to PND, but had lots of extra support from HVs and family which I think helped me digest everything that happened with DD. Because of what happened last time I need to see a consultant on 1st March to see what they are happy to let me do, ie VBAC or elective section. I think it might be nice to experience labour this time, as didn't really last time, so I know what you mean about feeling like you missed something.
I have been super emotional and tired this week, as well as very itchy, but i think this is heating/ cold weather comebo rather than anything else. MW appt yesterday, blood pressure taken, urine test all fine, I'm doing very well apparently, although if i keep feeling tired and hungover I need to see my GP. Was out in 10 minutes. They now don't listen to heartbeat til 22 weeks so need to wait to the end of March.
Am 14+6 today and have a very distinct bump, but I think DD stretched me loads last time (I think I had gallons of watertoo!) People are now braving up and asking if I'm pg, so hopefully already passed the is she isn't she stage.
Will have to start doing some bargain hunting myself soon, just need to motivate myself!Boots: £107.xx on AC :j

Hello everyone...
We had our scan yesterday, I was amazed at how much Bump was moving around and how little I could feel! I did have to get up and dance at one point as it was looking away from the scanner, but we have a little athlete who managed to do a complete flip into the perfect position by the time i lay back down. Everything came back fine, I can't believe all of it is going on in my tummy! We decided not to find out if we were having a girl or a boy, although we are having a 4d scan at the start of April so it might be quite apparent then. We'll see!
Thank you all also for sharing your views on labour; as this is our first time, i'm a little scared, but managing to avoid OBEM and the scary bits in books for the time being... my mother has told my husband he should watch OBEM though, and told me NOT to watch it! I will when I feel ready, but I don't want to freak out too early (I had a laparoscopy in March this year and had 2 weeks of nightmares and panicing about hospital and needles and anesthetic, but now i've had been through that and 4 long blood tests i'm a little more relaxed about it all - a good thing i'm guessing!!). But all of the views have come across to me as not being too negative and being very tactful, so I now feel a bit more reassured! I'm sorry that some of you have had horrid experiences; my mum and I nearly died when I was born, and we were both in hospital for 3 weeks... cue me choosing the other hospital in the area to have our baby! But do I believe in positive thinking... maybe positively thinking that a stork wil present us with our baby whilst I sleep peacefully through labour?!?
I hope everyone that has been feeling ill is feeling better today and that everyone has nice things planned for the weekend.
Thank goodness it's Friday!
Much love
R xx
(ps. Bump is thumping away so i'm guessing trying to say hello too!)0
