  • I know some places won't listen for the heartbeat at 16 weeks as it can still be quite tricky to find. My midwife did so I was lucky.
Suppose all you can do is ask and see what happens.

My MW listened to my baby's heartbeat at the 16 wk appt (although I was actually 18 weeks by then because I've been running late on everything). Still took her ages to find it though!

my midwife found a heartbeat within seconds (16 weeks) i commented to her that is not that easy to always find and she didnt think so.

They usually measure the Nuchal Transluency at the 16-18 week scan and do a blood test - The NT and blood test combined gives an idea of the odds your baby will have Down's Syndrome.

For information on the antenatal screening tests in Wales have a look here:

I heard the heart beat at my first scan and at my 16 weeks midwife appointment. It took ages for the midwife to find the heart beat - I'm slightly overweight but not by much and she thought it was more to do with the baby's position than anything to do with me. I was in hospital for a check up at 23 weeks and it took a long time to find the heart beat then as well so try not to worry if it takes awhile.

I'm 99.9% certain that isn't correct. Unless Wales is different but in England they can only do the nuchal translucency measurement between 11 and 13+6 weeks. If the downs test is done late it is bloods only. i notice the link you have posted doesn't mention the nuchal translucency, it just says they do bloods for down's screening.

    I agree.

Plus it's not routine to have a 16 - 18 wk scan. There's one at around 12 weeks (the dating/nuchal scan), which if done between 11 and 13+6, the nuchal fold can be checked, and one at around 20 weeks (the detailed or anomaly scan). These are the only routine scans offered on the NHS. If you're high risk or carrying multiples, you may be offered extra.
