I agree with GillyX, my midwife and GP both find it very difficult to find my baby's heart beat so I wouldn't buy a doppler as it's liable to induce unnecessary panic.

The National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) no longer recommends that dopplers are used at routine antenatal appointments as they can provide extra stress if the heart beat is difficult to find and false reassurance if you can hear it - the presence of a heart beat doesn't necessarily mean things are OK.

I think there were a few reports recently where people who were having pain used their home dopplers and decided that they could hear the heartbeat therefore nothing was wrong and they didn't need to contact the midwife. Unfortunately this wasn't correct and they had a miscarriage. Ofcourse there's no evidence that if the person had gone to the midwife the miscarriage could've been avoided but no one could tell either way.

But lots of people do use them without problems and find it a pleasant experience so I guess it depends on how likely you are to panic and what you think about it.

We have got a Doppler, Sonoline B. I don't use it often, and I told to myself, that if I do find the heart beat, it is great. If not - not to panic, as babies move so much. I had a listen this evening, and honestly, I find the heartbeat, I can listen to it for a bit and then the baby moves away, and I have to keep searching again. Ok, it wasn't bad tonight, I could actually listen for quie a bit both babies, but last time it was literally, 3 seconds and the baby is off. So, I would say, if you can control yourself from getting obsessed, get one. It is not something that will prevent something, but it is a bit of reassurance sometimes.

  • Hi all.

Been a busy couple of weeks and missed loads on here so just been reading through to catch up!

Update from my end : Baby doing great, no more bleeding and having been feeling first little kicks :o) So amazing. Got married on Saturday and moving house in 2 weeks so VERY busy but very happy.

Tummy is huge but loving feeling my LO moving in there. 20wk scan on 27th so not long till we know the gender!

Is there a list of our LO's genders anywhere? Haven't seen one xx

Congratulations on your marriage Thrifty-gal :)
My 20 week scan is three days after yours - hoping to find out boy/girl but Baby has been an awkward little one the last two scans in terms of refusing to move into the position required so I expect baby to have it's legs crossed around it's neck so we can't tell.

Don't think there's a list, perhaps it's worth starting one? It'd be nice to have gender and due dates together :)

Triangle, I am 18w+2 and I don't feel them kick yet. I can feel something occasionally that I attribute to babies moving, but it is not the kicks. I am sure we will feel them soon!

Triangle, as with ginvzt I'm 18+5 and haven't felt anything that I can 100% hand on heart say is a kick though I do occassionally feel like something is moving, especially when I am not sitting straight. I generally say that baby is on a mission to ensure I gain good posture ;)

    Just read this BBC article:
Breastfed Babies 'are more cranky and cry more'
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-16492490

From the reporting of the study I'm not entirely convinced about it's validity in terms of rigorous scientific research because it's based on a relatively small sample size with no equality between the numbers in the different groups or whether the mother is a 1st time mum or has other children, or how the baby is looked after outside of feeding.
Though these details may be addressed in the actual report (going to dig it out later if it's been published freely).

Plus it's purely reliant on self reporting by the mother, but it does make interesting reading.
  • yep, 18 +4 and no kicks.. had things where im like hmm that could be it moving but equally could be wind etc!! Still not got my 20wk scan appt date in yet..

I booked mine at my 12 week scan, did you receive your 12 week scan appointment in plenty of time or is your local maternity unit not very organised?
If you've had your other appointments arranged quite early it may be worth giving the department a call and making sure they have you on their system.
It may be that the appointment has been made but the letter has got lost or delayed in the Christmas post, there's no harm in checking.
