  • Hi and welcome Twi1ight - not long now and you will have your first scan, and definitely post here from whenever you like! Having a look tonight online for maternity stuff as didn't get a chance before. Thanks Pookie as well, I will prob get size 10 then, have gained 2.5kg now which is scary but what's more scary is my voracious appetite!

Funny Pookie you should mention the pain, this afternoon I had an ache just under my right lowest rib, like when you run too much too quick sort of thing... was sore for around half an hour quite specific area, then calmed down. Yours going over 2 weeks will hopefully calm down, no doubt we'll get pains elsewhere sadly ha ha!

What bed have you thought of for baby? We have a large crib but this seems to be for when they are older as it's big. Is is a cot we would get for 1st year? Looks to me that they last around 9 months so a bit of a waste of money unless we can get one 2nd hand. Or do we get a moses basket and lay it in the massive crib... or do we forget about it and have baby sleep with us for 9 months then move them to the crib... aaagh, so confusing!

    Hi everyone

sparkle I;ve bought some maternity stuff in my usual size - it's so nice to wear jeans that don't cut off the circulation when I sit down!

We are going to have my sisters moses basket - this can only be used until they are rolling over really so about 4 months which is why im not buying a brand new one. After that baby will go straight into a cot until he/she is big enough for a bed. My friend has used a cot from birth though, I don't think its a problem if you want to do that.

  • Thanks Apricot - just was wondering if the correct process is technically moses basket up to 4 months > cot from 4-9 months > Crib or bed from then onwards?

Also is using 2nd hand ok, I am tempted but then worried about Sudden Infant Death Syndrome etc, not sure what the latest thoughts are. There are so many deals on ebay and I have avoided them bedding wise out of fear and lack of knowledge I guess.

I am ridiculously hungry these days, had a terrible weekend with Chinese take aways and todays lack of food at home meant I ordered a hot baguette but with not great healthy filling as you just can't get anything hot that's filling and healthy!

Most people I know have used a moses basket until 4 months ish and then a cot from then until about 2 years old - that's my experience with family and friends so not sure if it's correct but I would rather baby stay in a cot as long as possible so they can't escape in the night :D

Using second hand moses basket/cot etc is fine but it is advised that you get a new mattress as some studies have shown a link between using a second hand mattresses and cot death (I think it's only ok to use the same mattress between siblings). Moses basket mattresses are about £13 in mothercare so not a huge expense for that peace of mind.

As far as bedding goes I can't see the problem as long as it's washed (which obviously it will be) - have seen some good price sheets and blankets in Asda mind, some of the ones on Ebay get quite expensive with postage.

  • Hi all

Well I had my 20 week scan today - everything is absolutely fine and i'm having another BOY! I'm over the moon!

For the discussion running about cots etc, we had our first one in a moses basket until around 4 months old aswell (but this will depend entirely on how active/long/big they are).

We then put him straight into a cotbed (we got one given to us) and he was absolutely fine. This was over winter aswell and I was initially worried about the large space/draught etc but it didn't seem to bother him one bit - maybe I was just lucky!

Is anyone in maternity clothes yet? I've not grown out of my trousers (lost weight actually lol) but my tops are getting to the point where I need new ones. Think I might invest in some maternity ones... or just get some cheap bigger sized ones for now?

    Congrats on the blue bump!

Congrats Kirstle, oh it must be so nice to be that one step closer to knowing them a little more!

What's the difference between a cot and a cotbed - does it extend?
Also a cot and a crib - from what I can tell a cot is smaller and often you can get rocking ones, whereas the crib seems to be more for the longer term when they are bigger.

Sequeena am not in maternity clothes yet but def looking at things and having a think what's worth getting new and what I can get on ebay or charity shops etc.

Apricot sorry when I said bedding I meant beds really, the linen itself is fine 2nd hand once washed, am even thinking i could get a normal sheet and cut into 4 perhaps. However the 'oh that's so cute' frame of mind may take over in Mothercare and such shops! Had a look in a shop called Pumpkin Patch and nearly fell over, some of the stuff is just way too expensive for something that will be worn for a few weeks/months.

    .

    Hi Sparkle
A cotbed usually converts from a cot to a toddler bed.

Re the cot and crib - it is actually the reverse in my experience - a crib is the smaller of the 2 (like a moses basket) and sometimes you can get rocking cribs as you say.
A cot tends to be used when they get bigger - my DD was in cot until approx 18 mnths.

Sequeena Im in maternity jeans and I've bought some bump bands (best invention ever) to go under my normal tops. I've bought two maternity vests but haven't seen many tops that I like tbh. Dorothy Perkins has some nice stuff mind and it's 20% off this week.

sparkle for me a crib is basically like a small cot - something that you would use instead of a moses basket and a cot is the bigger. Cotbed is slightly longer than an ordinairy cot and the sides come off so that it converts into a bed.
