    tax credits are a nightmare
  • Hi not sure if I am in right place but I lost my job in January 2013 and have not been paid sice December 2012 my husband is self eemployed with estimated earning of approx 11k and
I have a parttime income also of around 2k year. We we were not entitled to tax credits this year because we were over income treshold last year. i have contacted tax credits and told them our household income is now 13k with one child and they have said as I have earned over the threshold this year i dont quailfy and can reapply in April but last year it was June before I got the form so that would mean 6 months with nothing. Does anyone know if this is right or can I contact them in April before I get the form. sorry if I am not making sense. i have no redundancy yet or wages owed as I had to claim that through government fund and could take 8 weeks and forms couldnt be sent off until 5th Feb. i cant claim jobseekers as I am technically self employed with my parttime income. Hope someone can help thanks.

I was made redundant on Friday... I currently receive £82 per week tax credits I am married with 2 children my husband is self employed with an income of 19k on going he benefits checker it says I would receive £202 per week tax credits and £71 per week JSA? Does anyone know if this is right? I would be only £100 a month worse off by not working?? I was doing 24 hours a week... If that's the case no wonder there are so many lazy people who don't go to work if the government are payin you to stay at home... I personally do NOT want to be on JSA and will be doing everything I can to get back into work, hope someone can advise me, thanks

So even from next year under Universal Credit, you can still get working tax credits if you have savings over £16,000 if you're self-employed?
  • Hi

I currently claim WTC as a Self Employed Single Person. I currently work 30+ hours.

If my working hours drop to under 30 does this mean that my claim will stop immediately and I will no longer receive anything ? or will I just lose the 30+ element.

    Thanks in advance

The only reason you currently get WTC is because you work 30+ hours, so if the hours drop then you have to tell them as soon as it happens or you will end up with an overpayment to pay back.

hi,can anyone tell me what if anything my SIL can claim when she returns to work shortly, she has been off work for almost 2 years now after having a few of operations which has resulted in her having a colostomy bag fitted ,she has been getting ESA Wrag payments for the last 5 months but now feels she needs to return to work as she has really struggled financially, she hopes to return to work but doesn't feel that she is ready to go back to full time hours yet and is looking for advice what hours she needs to do to quaify for WTC etc.
She is single ,no children,in receipt of ESA Wrag payments currently but they will end at the end of this month as she wants or hopes to be back at work by then, thanks in advance

It should be 16 hours for WTC as she should be entitled to the disability element. See http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/tctmanual/tctm02510.htm

You will get something this year but it won't be much - you will need to tell them about your new jobs otherwise you'll have a massive overpayment. The limit for 1 child (if no disabilities or childcare) is around £26k, there's a disregard of £5k for income increases so you'll be assessed on £24k if you earn £29k.
