Re income - if it's gone down by less than £2500 over the tax year they are right, it won't affect this year's amount because there's a disregard of £2500 for falls in income between last year and this.

But you might get more because of DLA, and that will start now, so tell them straight away. There is a disability and severe disability element - see http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/tctmanual/TCTM02500.htm
  • thanks for your reply, yes it is less than 2500 so will be correct then, will ring them and tell them I am getting DLA thank you
  • Hi my name is Laura & I'm after a little advice.
My partner & I live together with 3 children & a combined income of £34K. Last year we were receiving about £330 a month tax credits but I have received a letter this week saying our childcare costs (of roughly £440 per month) are no longer taken into consideration as the thresholds have changed & as we earn over £32K per annum we are no longer eligible for any assistance.
I only work two days a week, so with this change I now make a loss by coming to work. It has come as such a blow to us and financially things are going to be so tight.
I feel certain that they should be factoring in our childcare costs but just wanted to make sure that I'm right before submitting an appeal.
Also, regarding the appeal process, has anyone had any experience of this - any ideas what their response times are like?
Thank you all for any advice that you might have...

They are telling you complete rubbish. Are you sure they have the correct details for you? What exactly does the letter say? Have they sent a new award notice?

For a start, the threshold with 3 kids is £38,800 and that's without childcare costs. With childcare costs it's much higher, about £48k with £440pm childcare.

Based on the above you should get tax credits of £5663pa ie £435 per 4-weeks.

Unless there's some confusion about what they mean - you won't actually get any WTC childcare, you'll only get CTC, but the childcare amount does affect the calculation of your CTC - without childcare you'd get a lot less CTC.

    Hi Laura,

To receive the childcare element both you and your partner need to be working at least 16 hours per week. Are you working under 16 hours per week? If so, This will probably be the reason why they are no longer paying your childcare element rather then due to your income details.

If you work 16 hours per week or more then I would suggest you call the helpline and check your details to make sure they have the correct information on file. You may also want to consider providing a new current year estimate for yourself to see if your payments need to be adjusting as well if you haven't done so already

    Hope this is helpful
  • At the end of my tether here with TC.
In January my partner moved in with me,i rang TC to let them know and they said they would send new claim forms, never happened, month later i finally managed to speak to someone who said they would send forms out...Never happened, finally 4 months and a visit to the CAB and my overdraft of 3k totally wiped out,we finally got our award.Only one month backdated, leaving us still in a lot of debt.
Sadly our relationship did not survive with all the stress of the debts and on the the 6th Sept i called to make a single claim, they immediately stopped our joint claim and still....nothing,everytime i call they give a different reason why i have not yet got my claim.
They claim they sent me a letter about my sons college education details, they didnt,so they sent again,i sent everything back 3 weeks ago, still nothing,i called last week and now they are saying they havent recieved it and now need details of my other sons college education, saying they had sent a letter about it..i never recieved it,so asked for it to be sent again...still havent recieved it.
I called this evening enquiring about what was happening, they said it can take up to 2 weeks to look at my sons details..its been 3 weeks!!,when i said i still had not recieved a letter about my other sons details, they gave me another number to call.
This number only operates between 10am and 4 pm,when i am at work, and no i dont get a lunch break and even if i did,it would take more than that hour to get thru to them!!

In the meantime,i have nothing,i could not pay my rent last month,i paid my younger son;s childcare so i could go to work but it has left me with nothing.
This evening i have asked his dad if he can go and live with him,i can barely feed my kids after paying the bills (not including the rent).I have sold all my jewellery and anything of value and am now just waiting to be made homeless, even if they finally do stump up,they will only backdate 1 month, leaving me in even further debt.

I just cannot do this anymore.
