  • will be checking my internet at 00:01 to see if its on..I cant believe we dont have any rectification of the 2gb limit from Redten. I wouldve thought there were enough calls regarding it. It wouldnt suprise me that red ten changes its trading entity after this fiasco.
  • Anyone got a screen print to say the pc is free? Not that it makes any difference but they want me to e-mail them with a screen print!

Spoke to the manager again and he meant to put me on loudspeaker rather than hang up! Not sure whether I should be happy about going on loudspeaker! Apparently my details haven't been passed to them by BT so they've got to ask BT for them again. Will keep you guys posted!
  • Nice one smoyle, with your permission could I e-mail that part off to them to prove that it's the pc that's free?

    Welcome McMikes.

I spoke to NJP and was told
REDTEN are your supplier and they would be the ones who would discuss your account spec with you as we are only the network wholesaler not the supplier to you.

Not having much luck with them are you?

Well so far Redten are saying it's unlimited.
NJP are saying it's limited to 2GB.

But, as Redten rightfully pointed out to me didn't NJP say in the register that we'd get an unlimited service?

The manager admitted to me that he doesn't understand all this stuff about 2gb limits etc (why is he running an isp then???), I pointed out to him that you can hit a 2GB limit very quickly if you're using iplayer etc. Why we were talking about a 2GB limit I'm not sure as according to him it's still unlimited!

I understand that not much can be done until we are actually recieving broadband from whoever is actually administrating this whole fiasco, but I do believe as I have read through this forum that most people are very much unimpressed with the way we have been treated.
I cam home on Monday to find no internet, only at work the next day did I find they had sent an email - wonderful way considering how most people will not have internet, followed by another email asking us to save everything from our mails before they are deleted, amazing if you don't have internet.
The mail I received today (monday, a second class post) did not apologise but stated "as you may be aware", well without internet and with no communication from REDTEN - how would we be aware.
I am looking forward to finding out what we will eventually receive, if it is below the expectations with bad customer service and a download limit, it would be better if we all cancelled or sued as a group giving us greater power, rather than inividuals, as so far most individuals are either getting mixed responses or no responses at all.
    (Sorry for the long speil)

This is their original FAQs with the bit about it being a free PC.

    SUPPORT

    Check Availability

    What is broadband?
Broadband is high speed Internet access that is permanently connected and allows both Internet and telephone calls to take place simultaneously on the same land line.
    What is Redten Internet?
Utilising BT’s billion pound broadband infrastructure and PC hardware and software technology from three of the biggest and best-known IT manufacturers, Redten Internet is the only out-of-the-box PC and broadband service on the market.
Click here for more information about our partners.
Will I be subjected to adverts if I sign up to Redten Internet?
Not at all. Like all ISPs we'll have an internet portal that you can use to search, read BBC news and access your email/webspace, which will carry some adverts, but certainly no more than any other ISP (in fact, probably fewer), and it'll be up to you to decide whether to use the portal or not.
Will I be bombarded with emails?
No, we'll send you the occassional email to inform you any changes and developments, as well as a few emails relating to special offers and promotions. You'll be able to opt out of these at any time.
Will I be able to change my internet home page?
Yes, you can change your internet home page at any time.
    Who can get Redten Internet?
Redten Internet is available to everyone who either has, or can have, a BT line. That’s a whopping 99.5% of the UK population. To see if your current telephone line is compatible, simply enter your phone number into the ‘Check availability’ box above and click ‘Go’.
    What does Redten Internet cost?
Not only does Redten internet simplify the process of getting online, but it also eliminates the traditional set-up costs that have prevented many people from getting online in the past. All Redten Internet members pay is a single monthly charge (starting from £19.99), plus a one-off ADSL modem and connection fee of £49.99.
Can I order a service for someone else?
You may want to order our service on behalf of someone else, this perfectly OK provided you have their permission to do so and they agreed to pay the monthly fee.
How long is the contract period?
The standard Redten Internet contract runs for three years. During this period you’ll get comprehensive hardware, software and broadband telephone support and a three-year hardware warranty.
What happens at the end of the three-year contract?
At the end of the three year contract you have two choices: to walk away, or to continue using Redten Internet. If you choose the latter option, we’ll reward you for your loyalty by giving you another computer worth over £500. This second free computer will be completely up to date and, featuring all the latest hardware and software you’d expect of a new computer, will ensure you can enjoy all the latest PC and internet developments and don’t fall behind.
Why do I need to fill out a form to pay monthly?
We use a finance partner to protect you against identity theft, and to protect us against non-payment. This is necessary due to the high value of the free PC. Rest assured, there are no hidden charges and there's no interest to pay.
Will I be able to cancel my contract?
Yes, you will. You'll have two options. The first option, which is open to you at any time during your time with Redten, is to return your LG Redten PC and pay an admin and restocking charge of £150. The second is to cancel your contract at any stage by paying a cancellation charge to cover the residual value of the PC, which you'll then be able to keep. If you cancel within the first 12 months of your three-year contract this charge will be £500; between 12 months and 24 months, it will be £400; and between 24 months and 36 months, it will be £250. The cancellation notice period is 6 weeks.
Will I be charged the connection fee if I'm not accepted onto the payment plan?
Absolutely not. Only once your Payment Plan has been accepted and in progress would your credit or debit card be charged. The reason for authorising (funds being reserved but not taken) is a fraud prevention measure to protect the identity of our customers. We can confirm that no funds will be removed from your account until your order has been accepted.
What can I do if I'm not accepted onto the monthly payment plan?
You can pay for your broadband using a credit or debit card. If you do this, we'll give you a 10% discount.
What happens if I move house?
Moving house is not a problem. We’ll simply terminate your broadband connection at your old property and reconnect it at your new property. All you have to pay is a reconnection and admin fee of £49.99.
Are you really giving away a £500 PC for free?
Yes, everyone who signs up to Redten Internet for three years will get a brand new PC absolutely free. As soon as it arrives, it’s yours, and you can do whatever you want with it.
How are you able to offer a free PC with every broadband connection?
It’s only by teaming up with BT, Microsoft, Intel and LG that this offer has been made possible. Without their support the cost of giving away a PC worth around £600 would be prohibitively expensive. You only have to do the maths: £19.99 per month for three years comes to £720, and we’re giving away a £600 PC up front. If you were to pay for the PC on finance over three years it would cost more than £720. Surely there must be a catch, right? Well, no actually. We’re hoping that over the three years you’re with us we’ll be able to temp you with a few more offers and that you’ll use our Savastore website to make online IT purchases, but other than that we have no hidden agenda. We’re hoping that over the three years you’re with us we’ll be able to tempt you with a few more offers and that you’ll buy a few upgrades from us, but other than that we have no hidden agenda.
How do I get my free Microsoft Vista operating system upgrade?
Your Redten Internet PC will come with instructions about how to claim your free Microsoft Vista Upgrade. All you have to do is follow these instructions and Microsoft will post you an upgrade CD and instructions about how to install it.
What happens if already have broadband?
Migrating from another broadband service to Redten Internet is simple. Providing you have a BT phone line, all you need to do is ask your current provider for your MAC (Migration Authorisation Code). Once you've signed up for Redten Internet, we'll ask you for your MAC. Once this has been provided we’ll switch you over to Redten Internet - and send you your free PC!
    What is a MAC?
MAC stands for Migration Authorisation Code. It's a 17 to 18 digit code that we need as your new broadband provider to swap your connection over. Mac Codes usually begin with "BBIP", "FTIP" "BBDS", or "BBDP" (e.g. BBIP 1642353/AB13C). If you come to us as a migrating customer with a MAC code in hand from your current provider, you will only lose service for a few hours. We will contact you when a MAC is needed with details on how to proceed.
    What is your contention ratio?
It's the standard 50:1 contention ratio.
How do I get a MAC?
To get yours, you need to contact your current broadband provider. Don't worry, asking for it is a standard procedure and their customer services will know what they have to do.
Click here for a list of contact details for all major broadband providers.
    What is a contention ratio?
When you connect to the Internet using ADSL broadband technology you are in effect sharing the connection infrastructure with other users. The term contention is simply a ratio used to measure the extent of this sharing. For example on a package with a contention of 50:1, up to 50 other broadband users may share the equipment and bandwidth in your local BT exchange. Using BT's £12 billion broadband infrastructure, our contention ratios are better than most!
Can I have a static IP address?
All Redten Internet customers can upgrade to a static IP address for a small additional monthly charge of just £3. You'll be asked during the order process if you want a static IP.
What is a static IP address?
A static IP address is necessary if you wish to do one of the following: - Run an email server - Run a web server - Run Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) - Use video conferencing services
Are there any other Redten services I can benefit from?
In the next month or so we’ll be launching Redten Telecom. An all unlimited daytime, weekend and evenings call package that will cost just £5.99 per month. The potential savings are enormous. We'll contact you shortly before the service launches.
How long will it take to get my broadband and PC?
Due to high demand for Redten Internet, there may slight delay in shipping your PC. This delay could be in the region of three to four weeks from the time your application has been processed. The broadband connection, however, can be made within 12 working days. If you already have access to a PC you can opt to have the broadband connection made before your new PC arrives.
What are the Terms and Conditions of Redten Internet?
Click here to view our Terms and Conditions.
What is the Fair-Usage Policy of Redten Internet?
Our Fair-Usage policy is designed to ensure your service remains fast and reliable at all times. A very small number of customers use high bandwidth applications, such as file-sharing software (also known as “peer to peer” or P2P) or other applications, which constantly send and receive many different types of files, usually quite large in size. This type of activity uses a lot of bandwidth and can significantly reduce the speed at which other customers can access the internet during peak hours. Approximately 1% of customers use more than 30% of the available bandwidth during peak hours. We don't believe this is fair to the vast majority of our customers. Please be aware we may give priority to light users over heavy users at peak times. Our Fair-Usage policy automatically identifies the very small number of extremely heavy users and manages their bandwidth only during peak hours 6pm to 11pm, to protect the service for all our other customers. Outside peak hours, the use of the internet by these heavy users is not affected. We think this is a fair approach. It protects the quality of service for the majority of our customers when they most use the service, while at the same time allowing the extremely heavy users to continue to send and receive without restriction outside of peak hours. If you don't use Peer-to-Peer or file-sharing software it is unlikely you will ever be affected by this Fair-Usage Policy. If you do use Peer-to-Peer or file-sharing software, all we ask is that you use this software considerately and send and receive large files outside of peak hours. If you are affected, we will contact you by email to let you know that your usage at peak hours is excessive and is affecting other customers. During peak hours, customers affected by the Fair-Usage policy will share bandwidth with each other and will be separated from other customers. The speed affected customers experience when downloading at peak hours will therefore depend on what these customers are doing. If they are all web-browsing and reading emails, they will experience normal broadband speed. If, on the other hand, they are using Peer-to-Peer or file-sharing software they will experience slow broadband speed. Outside of peak hours, no restrictions apply. To manage your usage, just ensure that any file-sharing or sending and receiving of large files is done outside of peak hours.
    Do you disable Peer-to-Peer software?
No, although we would ask that you do limit your use of Peer-to-Peer software during peak times.
What happens if my computer develops a problem?
Don’t worry, in addition to having access to both hardware and software telephone support, your Redten Internet PC will be covered by a comprehensive return-to-base parts-and-labour hardware warranty. If anything that can’t be fixed over the phone does go wrong all you have to do is return your PC to us. We’ll then repair it and return it back to you. The whole process should take no more than about a week.
How many email address and how much webspace will I get?
You'll get 5 email addresses and 10GB webspace.
    What is Peer-to-Peer?
A Peer-to-Peer (or P2P) computer network is a network that relies primarily on the computing power and bandwidth of the participants in the network rather than concentrating it in a relatively low number of servers. P2P networks are typically used for connecting nodes via largely ad hoc connections. Such networks are useful for many purposes. Sharing content files (see file sharing) containing audio, video, data or anything in digital format is very common, and realtime data, such as telephony traffic, is also passed using P2P technology.
Will I be able to access my email from other computers?
Yes, you'll have a log-in to a webmail service via Redten Internet's online portal. You'll be able to manage both your email and webspace via the portal.
    Do I need anti-virus protection?
We’ve teamed up with one of the leading anti-virus companies, F-Secure, to make this as affordable as possible. F-Secure Internet Security 2006 is a comprehensive ant-virus, anti-spam and parental control package. It normally costs £39.99 for a one-year licence, but with F-Secure’s support we’re able to offer it to all Redten Internet customers for as little as £1 per month, which works out as just £36 over the full three years. Unfortunately, due to the nature of virus attacks, our warranty doesn’t cover hardware that gets damaged by a virus, so for your own peace-of-mind, we strongly recommend that you do upgrade.
    What are your peak times?
Our peak times are between 6pm and 11pm.
    Do I need surge protection?
Each year thousands of PCs and other high-value electronic equipment are damaged by power surges caused by lightning and power-line disturbances. The cost of damaged equipment in the UK alone runs into millions of pounds and unfortunately in most instances the damage falls outside what is covered by the hardware manufacturer’s warranty. For this reason we strongly advise that you connect your PC and peripherals to a surge protector. We’ve teamed up with Belkin, one of the global leaders in surge protection, to offer Redten Internet members cut-price surge protection. Belkin surge protectors not only protect against hardware damage and data loss, but also eliminate the risk of losing out financially should a power surge occur. Each surge protector comes with its own £50,000 protected-equipment warranty.
What does the home-installation service cover?
In addition to the physical installation of your Redten Internet PC, our home-installation service will also provide you with a brief overview of your new system, some basic guidance about how to use it, and an introduction to using the internet. If you’re new to computers and the internet it’s definitely something we’d recommend.
