Well.......we wrote our letter last night and am sending it recorded delivery requesting a list of the penalty charges during the past 6 years!!
We had a business account with them so it would be very interesting to see the total amount of penalty charges.
I will probably faint from shock!!
We left the Northern Bank almost 3 years ago and would advise others to do so the same.
"Loyalty means nothing to banks"........be warned!

    So.....wish us luck....!
Had a business account with the same bank. Did you claim back 6 years? My account has been closed for 3 years. All the best with your claim

    Hi 19.
Yes.....we claimed back to Nov 2001 and were successful!!!!!
We could only claim back from Nov 2001 and up to May 2004 when we left them.
Had to file against them at the small claims courts so we had the bonus of the interest , they put in a DEFENCE one day and sent the cheque to us the next!.....(didnt make sense to us either but apparently thats what the Northern Bank does)

You should claim any penalty charges from them!....

  • Has anyone got anything out of Ulster Bank?

I know you all dislike those who repeatedly ask the same questions but there are 127 threads and I've tried searching for help on reclaiming in Northern Ireland. I've sent the second letter and have received a reply that they would investigate and respond within 4 weeks then got a letter this week saying another four weeks is needed!!!! stressing out about what to do now as my charges are £3700 and the limit in Northern Ireland is £2000 also its a joint account for me and my husband. We're with First trust Bank and a recent newspaper reported they had refunded one customer £4700 and his claim went back to 1996!!! Should I wait the extra 4 weeks?write another letter? or begin court proceedings and settle for £2000? With us having a joint account can we make separate claims? really need help with how to proceed. Northern Ireland customers not typically very forceful and have ben slow to catch on to the reclaim phenomenon!!!

Personally I am happy to answer repeated questions all day long. It keeps me off the streets :)

I dont know if you can claim in excess of £2,000 personally but there is a thread here on reclaiming in N.I. that might have some answers for you:

With regard to the 8 week delay, they have entered you into their complaints system and are allowed this time to reply to a complaint. You dont have to follow it though and can stick to the timescales laid out in the main article. Good luck :)

Apologies if this has been covered already but has anyone from Northern Ireland tried to reclaim bank charges from Northern Bank? I have just received a list of my charges from them and am sending my 1st letter to them.

Also, has anyone from Northern Ireland gone through the NI courts online process as I need to take court action against Natwest too?

Any help or advice welcome - thanks!

    Hi Dixie.
Yes....we took on the Northern Bank on our BUSINESS account so the letter to them was worded slightly different to what is used when claiming back on a PERSONNAL account.
Martins article here on "Claiming back bank charges" includes EVERYTHING you may need including TEMPLATE LETTERS AND the WORDING to use when claiming online.

You CANNOT claim ONLINE for any claims OVER £2000.... It would have to be done in person at a local court......I think they call it ...."taking out a civil action". I have no experience in that dept.

    http://www.courtsni.gov.uk/en-GB/default.htm

Remember you have to REGISTER first on this site to be able to use the online service.

We had to claim online against the Northern Bank after they refused to settle. They didnt make us an offer...smiles....but then again we went by OUR time table and NOT theres! They will try and drag out the whole process.
    So.....tip....
Follow YOUR time table and NOT theirs!

I was able to view the progress of the case online. At one point it showed they had put in a "DEFENCE" against us . We thought...."gosh......they are going to take us to the court for sure"
Then the next day they sent us a CHEQUE for the full amount.
Never even got to know what the "defence" was...smiles
Apparently putting in a "DEFENCE" is standard practice with them.....so dont be alarmed.
But then again you must always be ready for the remotest of possibilities that they might take you to the court!
    I wish you well.

    Kind regards
    Clare

  • I live in Northern Ireland but bank with the Alliance & Leicester, who have their head office in Merseyside. I have sent off the first two letters to the A&L and they have denied my claim on both occasions. I am now at the court stage.

Do I claim through the civil court service in NI or as the A&L are in England can I use the court service there. As my claim is for @£4900 I can't use the small claims court in NI.

    What should I do?

Thanks in anticipation of any advice offered.
