Does anyone know if any different regulations apply to banks based in n.ireland or does the same process that martin has outlined apply? There are differing time limits for england & scotland banks , so is the law any different in 'god's own country' ,as we like to call our little principality'!can anyone help?

Have a read of this website regarding claiming in NI and Scotland.

Can anyone help please? ....I have recently moved to Northern Ireland but still bank with Barclays with an English branch even though there are no branches for Barclays in NI. I want to reclaim charges from them but don't know if I can claim the full amount through the English courts (£4 000 approx)or am I bound by Northern Ireland law and can only claim a max of £2 000.

Check out this link as if you have an English address you can use you can claim via the English court system.

    Hi everyone,

I'm a beginner at this so here goes. My first question - has anyone out there been successful at reclaiming charges from the Bank of Ireland and who did you send the letters to in the bank. Secondly, i have a £200 overdraft facility on my account which i rarely have to use as my account is normally in credit. However, somtimes my account goes overdrawn by £20 - £30. When this happens i get charged an automatic maintenance fee of £8 as well as interest on the overdrawn amount and then they charge me for all my transactions for the previous three months which normally adds up to £30 - £40. I've never been overdrawn for more than a few days and never been overdrawn more than my overdraft limit of £200. These charges seem excessive to me can i claim them back?

    Thanks in advance,
    Rugrat

You can't claim the interest charged for going overdrawn but you can claim the "maintenance fee". Please read the Reclaim Help Thread post 4, link in my signature.

  • I'm with the First Trust Bank in Northern Ireland. I have a current a/c with them and a Visa Card. In April 2006 to August 2006, I missed payments on my Visa card, didn't contact them and on August 4th, they took almost every penny out of my current account without telling me (and paid it to my Visa card). They left me with 20 quid. I had a Direct Debit coming off the follwoing day that couldn't be paid (cos I had hardly any money left!!) and they charged me 38 quid :o

I phoned the bank, crying my eyes out cos I was so distressed and desperate beyond belief (see grey hairs) because they left me with nothing. They then gave me half the money back (100 quid) and I asked them to reimburse me the 38 quid as well cos it was so unfair. I mean, THEY took the money and left me with nowt to pay for DD's. Anyway, they agreed not to make me pay the quarterly service charge to run my current account (which was less than the 38 quid).

God this is confusing, sorry! Anyway, I've sent them the standard first letter to reclaim bank charges, with a cheque for 10 quid, asking for statements for the last 6 years (cos I've been charged 38 quid plus 14 quid referral charges for being overdrawn altho I never had an agreement to overdraw, but unfortunately did).

I got a letter from them yesterday saying they'll send me my statements as requested and they've taken the 10 quid lol.

Do I still pursue them and reclaim my bank charges? On the local news here, most NI banks have paid back their customers except for First Trust, who are apparently fighting tooth and nail not to pay back anything!

If anyone can understand all that, I'll be your friend for life :T

I understood it , even at this time of the morning and only on my first coffee :)

Basically they robbed you blind. They only refunded some of it and you are entitled to all of it. When you get the statements back check for all the relevant penalty charges and reclaim them. Show no mercy :p

Its a toss-up as to what banks fight and how far they go but they all back down at the court steps so please bear that in mind and good luck :)

don't forget to claim your charges on your visa card as well, also make sure you take what they have already paid back off your total

    good luck
  • Thank you so much for your replies. I really appreciate it cos I'm scared :o

My visa card is being paid back at £15 a month and i don't know if I've got the nerve to ask for any charges back. I reckon First Trust will hire a hit man to take me out, they'll be furious!
