You do NOT need a phone line. The phone line is there to order Pay per view movies etc, nothing more. Mine has NEVER been connected since I got Sky years and years ago. Son had multi room put in his room last week and guy asked if we had an upstairs phone socket. I told him we hadn't and was it just for the PPV as I'd rather son never had access to that anyway and he said yes. He set up multi room, never touched any phone line and all running well!

Sky don't care too much if the main box is not connected to the phone line but they do enforce the multiroom box, it must be connected as they do ring backs to ensure the box is still at the same address. You are supposed to have connected the phone line within 30 days of a multiroom install otherwise the first letter will be triggered. If you dont connect after that, I think it's 3 chances you get then you get billed.

This is to stop the multiroom box that is only costing £10 odds per month, being used in a different property as a main box, which would obviously cost more.

I didn't realise my phone line in an upstairs bedroom was faulty and I got plagued by letters a couple of years ago.

I've just got multiroom again yesterday and was told the same thing again, 30 days to connect to phone line or letters start. I suspect your installer just couldn't be bothered and was happy to do the basics and leave.

Yep, I had the letters a few years back when one of my boxes wasn't giving call back.

as i said in my post earlier, i had sky for years, never used the phone line, but when i had multiroom they were very strict, kept sending me letters then trying to charge me for extra sky instead of just the multiroom - apparently i was breaking the multi room contract. so beware......

    http://www.sky.com/shop/boxes/sky-multiroom/

Sky Multiroom: £10.25 pm. Provides the same Sky TV channels as your main Sky TV subscription on a box in another room. You must subscribe to Sky TV throughout and an extra box is required for each Multiroom subscription. Each box you have must be connected to the same fixed telephone line at all times. To receive your HD subscription channels in another room, you'll need another Sky+HD box and HD Pack subscription.

I beg to differ on this one too, had an occasion a couple of years ago when they couldn't update the box I got a letter saying they'd be charging me the full rate for both boxes in the house, I checked the things they told me to check and the box told me it was connected, low and behold, another letter, saying my fee's were going up, so I called up, created hell, saying that I'd done what it said in the letter and the box told me it was connected, so they tried a few things to no avail, and decided to send out an engineer, who checked it out and it was a faulty box, I got a refund of monies paid.
Thanks to all the competition posters.

Have taken offer for 25% discount on Tv subs, free HD box and instal with 1/2 price HD subs for a year.

We aren't very happy with our broadband from Sky so will be calling a couple of months to see if any offers available on this - anyone been offered discount on BB?

Just make up the fact you're getting slow speeds. Say you've got an iphone contract and Orange have just offered you free BB. If they say the line will still be slow just say Orange is free whereas Sky charge. Simples.

Another one people should have tried is if they have multiroom to say to cancel that. I was offered it half price. When I haggled. If I can be polite for a moment I'm frustrated people haven't haggled enough. It seems most have been offered 6 months and have just said yes straight away. I advised people to make a little wish list regarding what you'd like and some reference to other companies so you can say, freeview offered this, virgin offered that. If you have a stubborn operator I told you what to do, pretend the line is bad and that you've been cut off. Pretend youre talking to someone in the room and say something like, i think they cut me off. Then when you phone back tell them you were in the middle of negotiating. Another thing, be polite and talkative and if it's the opposite sex be on the verge of flirting! :D It works!

Read this and ask yourself, are sky really that bothered by giving reduced subscriptions and offers away........

jarr - Thanks for the suggestion - we have download speeds of, at most 4mb and are paying for the unlimited useage. I was thinking that maybe I should wait a while before trying to get reduction on BB as I have just taken advantage of reduction on TV subs. Another reason I'm thinking of waiting is there must be a lot of calls being made as a result of this thread.

It is definatley worth calling back and speaking to another operator - I was offered 6 months 25% reduction on TV subs and a free HD box which would be posted to me! I Ummed and Arred and was then offered 12 months 25% reduction on TV subs. I was "cut off" so had to call back and speak to another operator, who was much more helpful. I ended up with 12 months 25% reduction on Tv subs, 12 months 1/2 price HD sub, free HD box with free installation and managed to also wangle a free upgrade of the multiroom from standard to sky+

I know you have already stated it, but I cant find it - this thread is so long now:

What do you think is a good deal?

I had 1/2 price for year, Free HD for year, HD box. Got the 1/2 price extended by 6 months last November.

I am not interested in their broadband, can only get connect, and I dont think it will be quick/stable enough for what I need.

I could technically move the phone to them, but wouldnt want to be tied into a new contract.

I have only been a customer for over a year now, got a good Staff friends and family deal to start with.
  • Hi just spoke to sky they told me the 50% discount was pulled today even asked teh operator for his manager to complain about him thinking that would work, the manager said the same :(

I think your probably right. I was on the phone speaking to a lovely guy, and I distinctly heard a supervisor in the background shouting "No more half price , thats it, no more half price."

It will be interesting to hear what deals people are offered tomorrow.
