I just called and got the 50% off the TV package (full channels inc. HD).

My contract expired before Xmas and was meaning to ring and see about offers. Thanks OP for the prompt! Might not be a grabbit (as someone has pointed out), but very very useful - saving me over £150. With that saving I don't care where it gets posted.

So do you only pay the extra for the CNN, CNBC and Bloomberg channels, or are there other channels that you benefit from?

lol I see your point but true actually, yep I get Sky mainly for the 2 financial news channels but my wife gets it for the entertainment stuff (basic package you get 2 themes, I can't justify the cost of movies & sport).

We have the basic package, plus half the Movies, and HD pack, comes to about £40 a month. I was thinking of calling up anyway to ditch the movies, as they changed the channels and it's pretty pants to be honest, so thought I'd call after reading this thread this evening. Maybe I just didn't pitch it right, but they didn't really offer me anything :(, just offered to take parts of the package off (HD/movies etc.). I'm usually quite good at getting deals . Mind you the girl I spoke to was Scottish so might have something to do with it ;) (see my userid!). Brought it down to about £30 but didn't really leave us with much more than freeview to be honest. I'd be happy to jack the lot in, but Sky+ is handy and and the Mrs can't live without The Universe's Next Top Model (on bloody Living), so don't really want to cancel.
if you say you are still too expensive then end your call politely of course ... with in a few days maximum at most they will come back and offer you HD free for a year.

This is what I did, saying I would discuss it with my wife and see what she thought about cancelling it completely, so maybe they'll call back with some sort of offer. I didn't make that last bit up either as I do need to check with my wife as she'll go mad if I cancel it all without telling her first! :rotfl:

As some other people have found, going through to the cancellation department (although a little scarey if not really wanting to cancel!) can sometimes get you the best deals. They have slightly more power over what deals they can authorise. This used to be the case with mobile phone contracts too, not sure if still works with them though?
All i would point out is that, even if the worse happens and they accept your cancellation, you can phone back later and say you have changed your mind, they will not act straight away.

i called to cancel over xmas period, they immediately offered me 6 months at 50% off. it still wasn't enough to make me keep the subscription with them.

got a freesat hd box now. it will take me 6 months to recoup the initial cost of the box that i would have been paying for sky.

from reading everyones suggestions and experiences with phoning SKY i'm planning on discussing cancellation rather than reducing the sub as this seems to create a better response.

In the meantime am wondering if the investment in a HD freesat box would be a better plan - does anyone know what the set-up involves and can you use the same dish?
    Thanks for any help

I watch a lot of the American Shows; True Blood, V:The New series, Nikita, Dexter, Lie to Me, Nip/Tuck(Now finished), Desperate Housewives, Glee and many more.

The kids watch all the childrens channels, cbeebies, NickJnr, boomerang etc.

Most of these shows premiere early a few days after the states on SKY many are on pay per view subscription channels such as LivingTV, E4, Sky1 and FX. Some of the shows do filter down to the free channels but much later on in the year or possibly after a yr or so, examples are Dexter on ITV, Glee and Housewives on Channel4. Even V:The New Series was on Virgin1.

My mum has freeview through her TV and cannot see E4, Fiver or the +1 channels that SKY TV offers.

It really depends if you are into the import shows and like trashy/reality tv.

Once youve had SKY its difficult to get rid of it and go back to Freeview as you get used to certain things and programmes.

You get E4 (and E4+1) on Freeview, likewise Fiver, CBBC and CBeebies. Sorry for going OT...but facts are facts. If your Mum can't get these channels on Freeview she should retune her box :)

As an aside I had Virgin cable for years but gave it up for Freeview about 5 or so years ago. I do sometimes miss not having Sky 1, but not so much that I'd consider getting cable or satellite back.
