Batgirl - can you let us know the manufacturer and size of all four tyres please. Whilst you're reading those, have a look at the tread on each tyre. How deep is it? Any obvious signs of uneven wear?

Well you are wrong then, a single lane road is just that a single lane, usually with passing places where one vehicle pulls over to allow the oncoming vehicle to pass.

Someone has a single lane road and a single carriageway mixed up.
  • Are the tyres Woosung, Dark Horse, Hero etc. Had a 205 GTI with them type on the rear and it use to lose control regularly even at slow speeds.
I even have Pirellis on the front of my Type R and they are iffy sometimes, but not as bad as Far eastern cheapies. Eliminate the easy things first.
Check tyres, check suspension components, like a leaky shock absorber. Broken spring, unless they run a torsion bar / rear beam set up. Might have a bent wishbone from hitting the kerb. maybe take it and get a 4 wheel alignment done.
Has the car had any previous accidents?
  • I would second the advice above about getting a four wheel alignment done. If possible find someone who uses a computer based tracking system that can check camber and front caster as well as basic tracking.

The basic laser alignment systems arn't brilliant if its a problem on the rear as the ones i've seen/used assume that the rear wheels are correct and track the front wheels of these. On a car I had a few years back my local garage adjusted the tracking and it drove terribly, I took it to a garage with a computer based system and they determined that the rear was incorrect and the first company had adjusted the front to match the incorrect rear if you see what I mean.

    Best of luck!
I have a lot of problems with my neighbours, they hammer and bang on the walls sometimes until 2 or 3 in the morning - some nights I can hardly hear myself drilling ;)

I've actually had a pair of Hero tyres I was given that I was trying on the back of mine.
They're actually a good tyre, even in the snow and ice.
Traction grade by the UTQG is "A"
    Manufactured in China, by Federal.
I think they're getting the hang of it now.
(remember the reputation of Japanese tyres in the 70's, compared to how they are now?)

Woosung are sold as Nexan here aren't they, and they have a reasonable reputation now.

    Hi Batgirl,

I can't comment on your actual car, but a few weeks ago I went round a corner faster than you did, and I hit a patch of black ice. I had a frightening experience that resulted in me leaving the road and writing off my car. I was driving at a speed I thought was safe for the road conditions as I thought the weather had improved and the roads had cleared up. I've been driving quite a few years and this is the first time I've had an experience like this. I was really upset and shaken by the experience, and am still not 100% comfortable driving. Boy racers go out and learn about skids etc in car parks under safer conditions. I'd never driven like they do so despite reading advice etc, I know I braked in the end as I fishtailed, shortly before leaving the road, even though this was not helpful to my situation.

I wanted to post this as I can relate to some of the things you've said about how the experience has made you feel, from a confidence issue. I thought about whether to change the make of my car as I wasn't sure about driving that car again. I've given it some time and have just bought a new car the same model as my old one (as I did love and enjoy it) and plan to save up for some skid training to increase my confidence and skills. I also went out for some free skid training in an icy car park - is your OH an experienced driver in those conditions or do you have a suitable friend who could take you and the peugeot out into an icy empty car park and perhaps give you some practice at skidding? My OH and I had to take turns with several other drivers all doing the same thing in the car park.

Hope this is some help and good luck.

Thank you, this is the kind of advice I expect from MSE not telling me what I want to hear but polite honesty, greatly appreciated thank you.

I'm so glad you at last got some constructive help. I haven't read all the posts but the first couple of pages were posts from morons with clearly too much time on their hands doing nothing but mock, goad and twist your words.

I think its possibly only the DFW board where there is some proper support and advice on this forum. There are too many idiots on this forum who use the boards as a source of entertainment rather than offering anything useful.

Good luck resolving things. bigjl has some excellent advice.

    Very true!

I've only recently become a member on here and was surprised by some of the members who post on here, they seem to get a kick out of belittling and trying to humilate others, seems quite sad really.

I am a member on another car forum and you would get none of the responses that you've had on here, its full of people who know what they are talking about and will offer their help without hesitation, I have never seen anybody being mocked like on here!

This forum was mentioned when a guy asked for help on pensions, he said he couldn't believe hom many pompous (insert swear word!) there seem to be and now I'm a member on here I can see exactly what he was saying!
