  • I would say that they are fine to use - especially as you've cooked them so I really wouldn't worry about it from a healthy and safety angle. But, it is very naughty of Tescos to give you a product that is dead on it's use by date. I would definitely tell them what's happened... not that you'll get anything out of it, but just so they know it's happened and can at least lodge your complaint.

  • They should be perfectly fine to eat.
When you opened them, and they were raw, did you notice any funny smell or change in colour? I imagine if you had you'd have investigated there and then, but you didn't so they probably were fine. I'd take a piece of sausage and remove the sauce then have a good look, smell and small taste to see if they seem ok.

I would get onto Tesco though and complain about the food they delivered which should really have been reduced for quick sale in store. I believe they will refund you if you complain, just give head office a ring.

    It's only a game

thank you guys, the sausages looked and smelt ok, didnt notice until was clearing everything away the date on the packet, Im normally pretty good at spotting "off" food but was worried about the use by date. Will email customer services and pay closer attention to dates when putting shopping away, a few months ago they sent 12 yoghurts that needed using the same day they delivered them so youd think I would learn wouldnt you
  • Hi

I found a jar of white sauce for lasagne at the back of my saucepan cupboard today (I don't even remember buying it :o)

The best before date is July 2010 - d'you reckon it would be ok to eat? I have lasgane sheets and a tupperware of bolognese sauce in the freezer, seems a shame to waste the white sauce... unless of course eating it will give us listeria.

    Grateful for your views :D

Best Before isn't the same as Use by. Personally, I'd use it, if you open it and it stinks or tastes odd then chuck it, but I'll bet it's fine. I've used way older stuff than that!

    PS
The above assumes that it's still sealed and unopened of course.

if its not been opened it should be fine. Is the lid 'normal' ie not bloated?
When you open it listen to hear if gases hiss out - a sign of fermenting (not good).
    Have a good sniff
Then have a taste of it - any fizziness is sign its off.

I've used jars and cans years out of date and am still here to tell the tale - although my mum was useless with food dates so I may have a stronger toleance then some :D

    Hi prophecy_grrl,

It's impossible to give you proper advice without seeing or tasting the sauce. However, if you open it and it looks ok, then give it a sniff and if it smells ok then taste a little bit. If it tasted ok, then I would probably use it. But really it's only a decision that you can make yourself.

I'll add this to the Quick Questions on food safety / sell by / use by dates thread later.

    Hi 1jim,

As you've now decided to use them, I've added your post to the Quick Questions on food safety thread as your query may help others.
