I agree with your decision. I am usually of the "look, smell, taste" brigade and ignore dates, but even I would probably have tossed it out unopened!

    Hahaha!!!
this really made me laugh.....my OH goes on about 'cheese possessed' he loved it! Mind you he does pretty much eat anything, and if it's mouldy the green furry bits get scraped off...yuk!!
I'm not a sell by date obsessive, but I draw the line at anything with green furry bits on it!

I bought some neck of lamb on Friday from the butcher-opened it up this morning and smells a bit manky. Fridge doesnt seem very cold either. Kept it in its plastic bag though so this doesnt help as feels slightly slimy.I am fairly "hardcore" with food and don't take much notice of "use by" dates, mould on cheese etc but Im unsure on this one. Doesnt smell rotten or look green- i think its just on the cusp of going off. I will probably eat it but has anyone eaten lamb in this state and lived to tell the tale?

I'd be interested in this too. I bought some lamb that had been reduced a little while back and it had that slightly musty smell. I stuck it straight in the freezer and have been too nervous to cook it (silly me!) I'm thinking seasoned up in a stew it could be ok...

I know my dad used to wash meat in vinegar if it started to smell a little less than fresh. Your nose is your best guide here. If it smells really unpleasant, i'd not use it - can you take it back to the butcher? Might be worth calling and seeing if you can leave a message if they are closed so that they know you tried to use it today rather than Monday.

I had some steak like this yesterday, again - slightly musty smell, not off just not quite right. I made a goulash with plenty of paprika, garlic etc and it just didn't help it. It wasn't off (I hope!!) - but tasted unlike any steak I've had before. My OH left his and he is a total meat fan!

Let us know what you decide :) If you can take it back & swap for fresh it could save you some money as it should be easier to get money back on the fresh product uncooked.

sometimes lamb can have more of a smell than other meat.

If brought from a butcher Friday - I'd have throught it would be fine today.

Maybe try giving it a rince under the tap, you would defo know if it was off, off meat has a rancid smell.

    Hope you enjoy it
