If it smells and tastes fine, then yes!0

I assume it's got a "best before" date and not a "use by" date, if so, it's fine to useThrifty Till 50 Then Spend Till the End
You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time but you can never please all of the people all of the time0 -
Hi Dawning,
1. Open it.
2. Look at it.........if it looks ok....
3. Smell it ...........if it smells ok...
4. Taste a tiny bit.....
If it tasted fine then I'd probably use it but remember that anyone on an internet forum can't give you proper advice as they can't see/smell/taste the product and it's really down to your own judgement.
Once you've had some more replies I'll add your thread to the main one on food safely/use by dates as your question may help others.

i use stuff well past the use by date. my OH on the other hand is absolutely obsessed with what he calls 'sell bys'. its so bad that he would probably eat something that is off if the 'sell by' said it was ok to eat.
its an illness, i swear
(disclosure, I know that sell bys, use bys and best before are all different but this is how he refers to these dates)0 -
I would personally do the look, smell, taste test and eat if it seemed fine.Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!0

Oooh my question isn't about Pesto, but Jam. I know you're supposed to keep it in the fridge, but I don't like that because it makes my toast and pancakes cold. I've been keeping mines in a cold-ish cupboard but the other day found some grey-ish fluff that reminded me of mould in the jar, it's only about 6 weeks old, is this a sign I need to keep it in the fridge? The frontier is never somewhere else. And no stockades can keep the midnight out.0

i get that if its been in the cupboard, to be honest, and i know people will vom at this, but i spoon the fluff out and make sure theres none left and eat it. ive never been ill0

Thanks everyone, you've all pretty much agreed with what I thought you I'd do - sight, smell, test, eat.
Sorry yes of course it's a best before not a 'use by' .
It looks fine in the jar, will open tomorrow and sniff it then taste a little of it.
I was thinking back years ago we didn't have 'best before' dates on anything - my mum and gran would have tins and jars in the cupboards for years and they were still quite safe when they opened them!0 -

This made me laugh, wish I'd done this now rather than throwing it in the bin. There wasn't much left anyway. I know what to do from now on.The frontier is never somewhere else. And no stockades can keep the midnight out.0 -
I'm sure real pesto contains egg enzymes so I don't think eating out of date pesto is a good idea. Grow your own basil and make your own.Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!
