Hmm... I seem to remember reading somewhere that the "fluff" that you see is just the fruiting spores (the equivalent of flower stems on a plant) and that the mold itself has already penetrated deeply into the food even if you can't see it.
"Some" molds produce nasty or toxic chemicals which might not do you any good, too.

ohh do you have a recipe for pesto? i am growing basil and want to make my own as alot of the store bought stuff has dairy in it which DS2 is allergic too and i suspect he is now allergic to tomato too so i need something to put on his (gluten/dairy free) pasta!
and again if it looked and smelt ok and tasted fine i would use it but if i was the tiniest bit unsure then bin it - not worth getting ill over.Countdown to Discharge Is On!

Oooh my question isn't about Pesto, but Jam. I know you're supposed to keep it in the fridge, but I don't like that because it makes my toast and pancakes cold. I've been keeping mines in a cold-ish cupboard but the other day found some grey-ish fluff that reminded me of mould in the jar, it's only about 6 weeks old, is this a sign I need to keep it in the fridge?
You don't need to keep it in the fridge, the mould has probably formed because someone has put a dirty knife/spoon in the jar. Always use clean utensils and it should keep perfectly well."You've been reading SOS when it's just your clock reading 5:05 "0 -
I cooked some basa fillets / fish fillets tonight. THey were frozen - from aldi. I've had these before and they tasted really lovely. I defrosted them at room temp took about 20 mins. ANyhow, the fish tasted odd. The taste was mouldy / earthy. Do you think the fish was off. It didn't smell particularly of anything and flaked normally. I only ate a few mouthfuls and took my daughters away straight away. She nibbled it and refused normally loves fish. Just didn't want to risk it.
So do you think it was off, can you be ill from just a few mouthfuls?0 -

I'd say it's just the fish, it could have been caught at the wrong time of year. depends o what it's been eating
you say it didn't smell, there's your answer! if it smells distinctly fishy, THEN it's off.
if you're that worried though, have a good dose of honey. 2 tsps for yourself, one for a child under 12. take off the spoon. it's naturally antibacterial and can help ward of nasties.0 -
If in doubt you're better off not risking it - we can't tell you if your fish was off but i would certainly bin it if you are unsure
ill merge this with food safety later
