    Hello,

Just found an old loaf of soreen lurking in the cupboard. It says best before 15th September 2010 so it's not exactly fresh. Just opened the pack and it's not mouldy or anything but it smells sort of fermented a bit... do you think it's safe?

Any ideas to use it up?

    Many thanks,

    Cait

P.S. Just saw the label on it that says "suitable for home freezing"... it could have been saved 6 months ago! Oh well...

Think I might be a bit perturbed by the 'fermented' smell but if it's not too bad I'm sure it'd make a pudding with custard or some kind of bread and butter pud

Thanks AlwaysAllie, I wasn't sure about that either... think I'll ask hubby to sniff it when he gets home too to get a second opinion.

I was wondering about a bread and butter type pudding... thanks for your reply.

    Hi llamedos

I've done both....kept the leftovers in the fridge and frozen for another time and both have done me no harm.

I'll add your thread to the Quick Questions on food safety / sell by / use by dates later as your question may help others.

  • Hi,

take it you've never taken one home after a night out and found it on the pillow next morning, just ding it and have it for breakfast.

I know you shouldn't fully defrost & refreeze food.
Problem is, I bought a pack of steaks in a card outer - when I opened it, it turns out the steaks are packed together in a plastic pouch.

Would it be safe to defrost them just enough to separate them, then pack & refreeze individually?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

I would cook them first and then refreeze them.
