You can get away with doing this with some things, but I wouldn't with meat. You would have to defrost them too much I think for it to be safe. If you don't think that you could cook and freeze them without them being tough, you could defrost and cut them up and cook as steak pieces.

Perfectly safe - you may not need to let them thaw at all to prise them apart ....stop worrying

    Thanks, folks.

I put this query on another forum, and got 3 replies saying much the same thing - do not leave at room temperature, but defrost in the fridge (so the meat doesn't get too warm) until they can be separated, then refreeze immediately.
Steaks may be drier than before, but will be OK.
  • The US dept of agriculture says it's fine

    http://www.fsis.usda.gov/factsheets/focus_on_freezing/#14

"Once food is thawed in the refrigerator, it is safe to refreeze it without cooking, although there may be a loss of quality due to the moisture lost through thawing."

seriously - microwave it and eat it next day! I think it tastes better (especially the curry) the next day. except if it has prawns in it! they are best removed if you plan on eating it the day after.
