You can usually tell with chocolate if it's off as it goes a funny white colour.0

caitybabes wrote: »Hello,
Just found an old loaf of soreen lurking in the cupboard. It says best before 15th September 2010 so it's not exactly fresh. Just opened the pack and it's not mouldy or anything but it smells sort of fermented a bit... do you think it's safe?
Any ideas to use it up?
Many thanks,
Cait
P.S. Just saw the label on it that says "suitable for home freezing"... it could have been saved 6 months ago! Oh well...
Did you use it in the end? As this has dropped down the board ive merged it with food safety

I would - one at a time! If they taste OK, and smell OK, then they will be OK.
Generally, when chocolate goes a funny white colour, it means it has been kept too cold (from what I recall), but it is still edible.
Send them to me, Ferrero Rocher is my absolute favourite! What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0 -

I would eat them if they weren't mouldy!0

Eat them ... use your common sense.0

chocolate white colour is ''bloom'' and is edible. (its either fat or sugar). BUT old chocolates almost always HAVE bloom because of the storage time.
I'd have no hesitation trying an old chocolate, its obvious when it tastes stale. If it tastes stale I wouldn't fear for my life but I really wouldn't WANT to eat any more!0 -
Ditto! If they look, smell and taste ok, then eat them.
If they taste ok but you are still a bit unsure, then don't give them to little kids, oldies or anyone else with a low immune system.Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!0 -

me too, hate Ferrero Rocher even though I'm a bit of a chocoholic.
If you liked them that much you'd have eaten them in the first place, then they wouldn't be out of date - the amabassador would not be given the opportunity to be spoiling me, or my weekend by sitting on the loo for most of it cos I ate chocs past their sell by date.;)Member of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19
