I find if its meat thats been frozen for a long time if you defrost it and cook it in some kind of sauce, ie stew, curry etc it is fine. It also helps if it gets a longer slower cooking time. Pretty much what you would do for cheaper cuts of meat to tenderise them.

Use your common sense and a good sniff at it when defrosted. If you're on immunosuppressants then your tolerance for levels of bacteria in foodstuffs is lower than most of us here so if in doubt, either only feed it to him ( it won't affect his diabetes control in any way as long as it's safe normally) or bin it. But immunosuppressed folk really do have to take more care over the preparation and storage of foodstuffs. What might be a mildly queasy tummy for any of us could be a major health disaster for you. Don't take any chances on this, please. In the end, it's only a few £££s and you can make up the difference by eating cheaper foods for a few weeks, surely?

or do you have any pets? cat or dog that can be fed anything your not sure about?

Personally I'd eat anything out of the freezer but if you have a weak immune system then it seems a shame to waste something just because your not sure!

I did like the bit about trying out on MIL first :)

I have moved house 5 times and broken 2 freezers since 2004 so have no experience of this problem :rotfl:

I'd say the same as everyone else though. Bit gross to think it probably hasn't been cleaned in all that time either if the food is that old _pale_

Oh god that hadn't occurred to me. Even MORE incentive to defrost and scrub the thing. Eww.

I have just grilled some sausages to black, and popped them in a casserole. They looked funny but I think that was the chili flavouring.

Anyway I'll let HIM taste it first, wait a while, then try them myself. Well, it's his freezer and his sausages. :p

Personally I woulditch the lot including the freezer. Buy a nice new shiny energy saving freezer and start from scratch. That way you cannoy catch any nasty bugs or do yourselves anyharm.

They will be fine for both today or tomorrow, the use by dates are always a little over cautious, they will still be fine to eat tomorrow.
