I've got a large chicken that I was going to cook overnight in my Slow cooker, but have realised that the use-by date was yesterday. Its sealed in protective packaging, looks fine, and has been kept in a very cold refridgerator.

Would you risk cooking and eating it?

I'm going to risk it. Sorry if I sound impatient, but feel that the sooner its cooked the better. I'll stick it on high for a few hours, then turn down to low. I'll give it a good sniff first! :D

If anyone in the meantime gives me a good reason not to eat it, my dog will be very happy.
  • There is absolutely no reason not to eat it. I reckon the supermarkets put a fair amount of tolerance in their use-by dates so I think it would probably be safe to eat for several more days if it's been chilled properly since it was bought.

Does dried pasta go off? I have some that has been kept in a glass storage jar on the kitchen counter, only DS ate it and he moved out about 19 months ago, so it has been there for a little bit longer than that. OK to use or should I bin it? TIA.

    Sue.

  • Dried goods like that don't go off, they just lose their flavour and can sometimes take a bit longer to cook. It might be a bit less tasty but it most certainly won't cause you any harm at all. I'd eat it, no problem even if I had to blow dust off it first......

Put it on high for a few hours about 6pm, then left it on low overnight till about 9.30am this morning, so well cooked. Turned the slow cooker off, and have left it all to cool down. Smells and looks delicious. Glad I didn't waste it. :T

    Hi quintwins,

Yes, I always make butter from cream that's on or just past it's sell by date. Just to be on the safe side, give it a sniff and a taste first to check that it's ok, then let it come to room temperature before you begin. The resulting butter freezes well.
