    Well done Poppy :j

Mirror - I wouldn't worry just yet. I understand BF babies can often go a few days without pooing and its OK. I have a friend who's baby doesn't go for 10 days at a time  Now that would freak me out!! When he does finally go she ends up having to cut him out of his clothes as its so bad she can't pull them over his head!!

ok so little one hasnt given me a pooey nappy now for 2 days, this will be third. he is 8 weeks old and breastfed with the odd bottle of formula thrown in if i need a sleep.. when will it start to get uncomfortable for him and what do you give to help please.
Since my LO turned six weeks she only poos approx every 4 days... a couple of times she hasn't gone for over a week! I was a little concerned in the beginning but HV said it is extremely unusual for BF babies to be constipated so not to worry. When she does go...oh my! That said, I use cloth nappies and not once has the poo leaked outside the nappy. I think if she were in pampers it would be coming out the neck and feet holes of her babygros! She sometimes gets a bit more cranky on day 4 but doesn't seem to be in pain or discomfort. As long as you have plenty of wet nappies there shouldn't be cause for concern.

edit: the advice I was given was a teaspoon (5mls) of orange juice with some cool boiled water - preferably freshly squeezed. Never really worked for me though.

Looks like I should ditch sugar for oj. It's mil's trick and I have to say it does work but I have only had to do it a couple of times.

Up to 10 days between poos is fine for BF babies. As long as when it comes it is soft and not hard pellets then you don't have constipation. And you don't need to give them anything to help it on its way.

As has been said, BF babies rarely get constipation, after all the milk you make is specifically tailored for their own individual needs. Which is why there is so little wastage too.

Breastpumps - I used the Tommee Tippee Manual and the Medala Manual. I also tried an electric pump in hospital and it took the same amount of time to express, so I never bothered upgrading to an electric. I liked both my pumps, the only reason I ended up with 2 was because I melted my Tommee Tippee in the microwave and had to buy the medala one. But Tommee Tippee sent me out replacement parts for free which was good.

Poo's - the longest DD has been so far was 7 days and I think that poo was the only one that has ever leaked outside the nappy. However DD has experienced a lot of constipation (we assume anyway). When she was a few months old she was straining all the time and nothing was coming out and she seemed in so much pain, so we ended up at the doctors and used suppositories a couple of times until our 2nd visit to the doctor revealed that suppositories aren't recommended anymore so after that we used lactulose. I'm not sure if it was just coincidence but I'm terrible for not drinking enough and I made an effort to drink a lot more water after this and things improved greatly and she hasn't had any poo problems since.

    Hi Ladies,

Hoping I can join in and ask some questions please? I was until very recently on the main pregnancy thread, then last week I had my daughter by emergency c-section at 28+6 weeks. She is in the neo-natal unit at my local hospital and doing well. She is a fiery little girl and the Doctors are pleased with her progress.

My questions are regarding expressing, obviously she isn't breastfeeding but I eventually want to and I'm expressing at the moment to keep my milk supplies up and provide for her. I am also donating my milk as I'm producing far to much for my little girl! How often should I be expressing to keep my supplies up? Also for anybody else who has had a prem baby, what age can you start breastfeeding and was it easy to get going? I am seeing a breastfeeding lady next week, but thought it can't hurt to ask on here as well!

Also I had my section last Thursday, what is the earliest I can start back on contraception? I have always been on the depo jab and want to go back on it, but I'm not sure when to make an appointment with the Nurse! Not that I'm even thinking about dtd yet, but I like to be prepared!

Sorry for all the questions and information, but all of these things are swimming around my head!!

Thanks and I look forward to joining in!!

    xx

Congratulations janninew. I can't answer all your questions, I'm guessing you should express at least every 4hours but I'm sure you will soon get told more. Expressing during the night would probably be beneficial too as that is when your body makes the most signals to make more milk.

With regards to contraception if you are:
    * exclusively breastfeeding (no formula or food or anything else) AND
    * your LO is under 6 months AND
    * your period hasn't returned
Your protection from pregnancy is just as good as taking the pill. My periods didn't actually return until 18 months after LO was born but the risk is higher after 6 months as you just never know when your periods will return and you can catch an egg before you have had your first period.

Do let me know if you have any more breastfeeding questions, I can always ask my supervisor if there is something you really need to know or of course you can ring the breastfeeding network support line.

My DD was born a little bit earlier but like you I had to express.I expressed three hourly, including throughout the night,to build up a stash in the freezer so we didn't run out.I found it very stressful when the milk was running low and was barely covering feeds so it was a real relief to see a stock building up and took some pressure off me as stress will inhibit the supply too.At one point my supply really dried up when we almost lost DD a few times and I was prescribed domperidone to boost it again.
Are you donating to a milk bank?I tried but the whole process was so hard to get signed to in our area I gave up so well done you!I think it's really admirable that you are thinking of other babies at this really stressful point in your life x
I used to do kangaroo care which helped with my supply or I expressed next to her incubator as being with her helped too.My daughter used to nuzzle on the breast but we were told that it'd be at least 34/35 weeks until a baby learns to co-ordinate the whole suck, swallow, breathe process needed to feed safely and not aspirate.I felt pretty useless not being able to feed so once she was off the vent and TPN,onto my milk and more stable I made sure I got involved helping with the tube feeds. Are they letting you do this yet?Sending you hugs xx

    Morning ladies.

I've not been on for a while as been ill with tonsillitis, away at Center Parcs and then mad busy with work trying to catch up as there was no-one to pick up the slack while I was ill.

Center Parcs was fab :D Apart from Joe not sleeping very well at all - to the point that we had to let him sleep in our bed one night for the first time ever. I'm not really sure why he slept so badly, but think he possibly wasn't very happy in the travel cot as it's not as big as his cot bed. He's going to be in a travel cot again when we visit my folks over Christmas, so I'm not really looking forward to having it all over again :(

The little man is also now walking!:D

And I'm a bad mummy :( I took him to get new shoes on Friday and his feet had grown from a 3 1/2 to a 5, so he must have been all squished in his cruising shoes :(

Well, I should think about getting up and in the shower now. My turn for a lie in today ;) Hope everyone has a good rest of the weekend.

Hi Bigbrid, hope you are feeling better. Glad Centerparks went well apart from his sleeping. Poppy sleeps better in her travel cot is strange! Well done to Joe for walking too.

Just out of interest at what point are you meant to buy shoes as Poppy is now pulling herself up to stand so guessing it won't be long till she is cruising the furniture?
