Hi. I'm just after some advice about what a newborn baby should sleep in at night.

I'm due on thee 30th - so not long now:eek::rotfl: We have got a moses basket for the baby, it does come with a cover but think i prob wont use that until baby is a bit older. When we go to bed our room is warm but then during the night it's gets cold. I'm thinking maybe leaving our heater onto low. What best for baby to sleep in? I was thinking vest, sleepsuit, a hat and blanket round her. Will that be enough for a newborn?

    Thanks x:)

You'll get to know your baby with trial and error. DD was born February and I recall it was freezing outside. She was in a moses basket in a sleepsuit (found she got too hot with a vest as well) and a cellular blanket folded twice and on colder nights a sheet and the double folded cellular blanket.

From 6 weeks she was big enough for the sleeping bag which was great for feeding as she didn't get cold when I took her out (I was BFing and not very good at it then :o)

    Definitely not a hat indoors.

My eldest was born during a very cold spell and I put his hat on in the house and got told off when the midwife called :o

I second playing it by ear. It depends on what temp your baby likes and any other behaviours they have. My middle one was born before sleeping bags were common and he hated being covered up. I found it was better layering him up in clothing as he kicked the blankets off then woke up crying because he was cold!
Here I go again on my own....

Hi everyone, sorry I've not posted in a while, been manic! Barely even lurked!

Wendz that's a shame about your Xmas dec. You've got time to get another...just! We did our tree yesterday and LO was impressed with it for about a minute! He's only 16 weeks so can't expect much more. We've got his Christmas outfits all washed and ready as we've got the first Xmas party this week. He'll hate me for it in 15 years!! Ha ha!

He's sleeping in his own room now. Not going badly although the joys of teething are starting :-(.

I'm so behind with Xmas pressies but hope to hit Internet shopping tonight.

I too wondered about pigpen. Glad she's ok.

Back to the housework .....ho hum

Hey Laura, we have LO sleeping in vest, sleepsuit and swaddled in a blanket with another on top. She seems happy in this. No hat though as if baby gets too hot they will cool down through their heads, and wearing a hat would prevent this.

I'm after a bit of advice myself. My LO is 5 days old and suffering terribly with wind. She is fine during the day atm as we have a lot of visitors who are nursing her and automatically winding her. However we are having problems on an evening and through the night. We are winding her mid feed and after feed. Then once she is settled we put her in the crib or moses basket depending on which room we are in. After about 30 mins she wakes really distressed and squealing like a piglet. I get her up to wind her again. I am giving her Infacol before each feed. We have elevated the top end of the crib and basket to help with the wind. She is bottle fed but trying to encourage my milk to come in so I'm putting her on the breast for 10 mins before each feed as recommended by MW, and have started to get some milk from one breast. I just don't know what else I can be doing to get rid of the wind. Any ideas or suggestions welcome :o

Is the teat size right on the bottle? If it's too small, they can swallow loads of air. You could try the next size up and see if that makes a difference. Also try an anti-colic teat rather than normal ones.

Off work today and putting up the Christmas trees and decs :j

  • Yeah, I read to go up a teat size, but I'm worried as she is a right hog and gulps her milk. She drank 50mls in 5 mins last feed!?!?
  • Hi Wonder Womble. L has always suffered with wind from Day 1. We have used Infacol but to be honest we have had to ride it out mostly. I would recommend trying anti colic bottles - we use Dr Browns which seem to help a bit. We too raised one end of the crib which I feel has helped too. We also moved L onto the Size 2 teats at about 5 weeks ( I don't know if before this it would have been a bit too much for him).

People always just told me to spend 20 minutes winding him but it really wasn't all that easy, especially in the middle of the night when I was sooo tired.

L is 16 weeks now and since holding his head up himself, the problem has got much better. In short, you sound like you are doing everything you can to help but its probably one of those things you need to ride out :o
