giz - with porridge i just cool it in lumps on a board and he has it as a finger food. early on when we did some baby porridge he had it on a preloaded spoon.

CL - of course, L has water with most meals, though I confess this is where i get a bit control freaky as he just bashes it around if i leave it on the tray and everything ends up soaked and all the food gets squished so i tend to offer the cup near the end of the meal and then let him have a drink and sometimes play with it then.

pigpen - i tried the nuby cup with L but he just chewed the teat and the first time i took it out it leaked in my bag - probably i didn't screw the lid on enouth!

There are 2 types of spout.. the shaped ones leak terribly.. the ones we have the lids are round teats and never leaked.. I contacted them about our leaky ones and they repaced them free of charge for these ones.

Hope everyone's feeling as good as is possible for a Monday morning :) I hope you get Squeak's cough sorted out soon, PP.

I'm feeling tired and grotty this morning. Joe was up from 11 til 1 this morning. No idea what was wrong, he was fine when picked up but started crying as soon as he went back in his cot. We eventually gave him a bottle even though I didn't think he was hungry, we'd just exhausted pretty everything else that might be wrong. He drank barely any but it seemed to settle him. Then I woke up feeling sick, so maybe that's how he was feeling.

Our house has dusky pink carpets throughout which I've been wanting to change pretty much since we moved in, but there's really no point at the moment as they are just going to get wrecked over the next few years. At least I don't worry when something gets spilled or Joe is sick :)

Joe has a mix of mushy stuff and things he can hold and feed himself with now. We went out for lunch yesterday and he just had some carrot, broccoli and courgette off my plate. I don't think he ate very much, but he wasn't complaining about being hungry (and he's not shy about letting you know when he is hungry!) so obviously had as much as he needed.

If I give Joe a loaded spoon, he usually tries to put the wrong end in his mouth :rotfl: We've got a bit of work to do there...

We have a tommee tippee sippy cup with a silicone spout. I think they are like the Nuby ones. At what point do you stop having to give them cooled boiled water in their cups? Do I still need to be boiling water before giving it to Joe (he's nearly 7 1/2 months)?

And now I must try to find a gas engineer to come out as we can smell gas near the fire in our living room  I've been telling DH for a couple of weeks that I could smell it and he reckoned I was imagining it, but now he can smell it too. Can't be much of a leak, else the house would probably have blown up by now :o

Mine never had boiled water they had tap warmed up to room temp with water from the kettle.. It isn't like the continent where the tap water may have all sorts of dirt and crap in it. There were probably worse germs on the floor where they play, my boobs where they fed and sneezed on them by other children.

Fat whack is working her way through apple biscotti and rice cakes after a huge bowl of porridge.. I'll do her some crumpets in a sec.

nuby+super+spout.jpgThe others we had had this shape spout and leaked constantly.

We have the second one and I find it leaks if I do it up wrong :o Now she has 2 of the 9m+ ones and they are fine, if a little fast for her, she sometimes splutters a bit!

Ours leaked whatever we did.. I sent them back to Nuby and they sent me the top ones as replacements without even questioning it.. it must be a common issue!

Cheers PP. I was thinking that boiling the water seemed a bit pointless, when he spends a good deal of his time munching on the cats' baskets!

We could do with a second cup for Joe so I might have a look for one of the Nuby ones.

Well at my weaning class which was based on BLW, she said to give water or milk with meals in an open cup. But maybe that was focussed toward formula fed babies? I don;t know. That's another question for me to ask next time I go.

You know BF and FF babies are from the same species, and have the same nutritional needs. If the weaning group is making out that FF babies are that different maybe you should remind them that they are all humans, it's not like feeding a cat vs feeding a rabbit :p

They reduce their BF's/bottles when they start eating more food so yes by this point they need other drinks, water, juice whatever.

This is the time to get them used to new tastes. Unless you really want to be BF'ing every 5 minutes until your child goes to school because they aren't allowed to drink anything else ;)

Oh and whilst you could give your baby a drink in an open cup, I would make sure you have an entire change of clothes and a plastic mat on the floor first :rotfl::rotfl:

All mine have had cups with spouts and none of them have grown up hideously deformed and they all now drink nicely out of normal glasses. Whilst it would be great to skip the plastic cup stage, it isn't practical really (for me anyway) and you did to do what is right for you, not what someone running a group (who must think you've got a load of spare time to clean up all that mess) has to say about it.

Please don't take this as any kind of dig at you Giz, because it isn't. I love you honest!

It's about all the weirdness being spouted by the NHS at the moment where no one is allowed to use their common sense anymore :eek:

delain I love your honesty, you did make me laugh and because its true. However some babies can use cups DS could use a diody cup but I think because he copied DD and was good at things like that whereas Bob will be lucky if he gets one before he is 2 lol He drinks out his cup but spends alot of time bashing the cup around as well. I use the cheap tommee tippee cups but it does drip all the time. I bought a different one which doesnt leak but it comes out too fast for Bob so gonna keep it in the cupboard for later.

DD has the cream for her nose - it is impetigo - lovely. Apparently she should be fine to go back to school though.
