cows milk is not to be a main drink until they're one but it's fine on cereal etc. L has own brand shreddies or porridge or other cereals for part of breakfast with cows milk. formula is only cows milk plus a few other things anyway!
Thanks for clearing that up. That's basically what the health visitor said, but I wasn't sure.

Woke up to just a dribble of water coming out of the tap :( There's a burst pipe somewhere apparently. Enough water to brush my teeth and fill the kettle for 1 cup (took a while), but not enough pressure for the shower to work :( I hope it's back on before we go to brighton as I desperately need a shower after a sticky night. DD needs a bath too.

Has anyone seen the free swims with Schweppes? We've got 4 of the bottles and we're going to go swimming at the local hotel next week for the sum of 90p (and we get 2 bottles of water to drink). It's great for us as we're taking DD swimming and she's only in the pool for 10 - 15 minutes. I usually go on my own at my gym pool as I have membership, but OH can't come. And I was a begrudged to spend £8 for the 2 of us to go to the leisure pool for such a short time.

I have some more questions on the BLW route. DD will be going to nursery when she's about 11 months for a few half days a week and then the other 2 days at my mums and a few months after that she'll probably need to be in nursery more when I return to work 5 days a week. At this point would a baby who has been spoon fed still be spoon fed? I'm just wondering if the nursery will follow the BLW if you ask. I was reading this:
    http://www.babyledweaning.com/features/baby-led-weaning-diary/
And there's a bit about how she found out her nursery gave up BLW her child and started spoonfeeding him. I have to admit I'm not a strong person and not sure I'd be able to tell the nursery what I want.

I know when I was round my friends house, their 20 month old was being spoon fed. But I don't know if this is normal. But then she's also still drinking milk out of a bottle too which I found odd. I don't want to offend anyone though :s Just watched far too much of that Nanny TV programme and remember one on sippy cups and always said I wouldn't use sippy cups after seeing that.

We use washable nappies & wipes here, too. :D They don't have to be mega-expensive if you get them used. Mine have come from a combination of Freecycle, http://www.used-nappies.co.uk and http://www.thenappysite.co.uk (last one is my fav). New ones are hideously overpriced IMO and used are perfectly fine for a fraction of the price! I also have 3 slings and take Finn to/from the childminder's in one everyday. I would own more, but they ARE expensive. I have one in each of the 3 different styles (wrap, mei-tai & ring) and they all have their pluses and minuses for certain functions. #1 in comfort is the wrap sling, but it IS faffy and takes some practice to learn to tie. Mei-tei is the easiest but slightly less comfortable. The ring sling, I just use for short in-and-outs and I don't find it very comfortable but literally takes seconds to put on.

Oh and we're still BFing at 17 months :). And did BLW weaning...LOL. Not a contest, but nice to see other like-minded mummies too! Of course there are lots of lovely mummies who do different things - to each their own and you're all lovely and bringing up your babies the best way for YOU. :)

eta: giz, we use a CM precisely for that reason. I didn't want to compromise on how Finn ate his food, so it was an important factor when selecting what sort of childcare he would have. Every baby is different on how soon they master cultery, so Finn still needs a lot of help (only with mushy things & stuff like soup, most things he eats with his hands) but I know of babies 3 months younger than him that are pretty independent IYSWIM. Personally, if it's an issue that YOU find important, then find a place/person willing to accomodate you. After all, you're paying them to do a job!!

Another question. If you give them toast, do you use white or wholemeal bread? I'm sure when I was reading about weaning in general it says not to give gluten till they are older...argh it's all so confusing. I'm sure our parents didn't worry about these things.

OK I found an NHS leaflet that says to not give gluten if you start weaning prior to 6 months old. But my question still stands for white or wholemeal?

I read that you shouldn't give them gluten until they are 6 months old. I only gave my LO toast the other day (she's 6 months) and it was granary bread with unsalted butter. (Most of it went on the floor).

Morning! Giz we use wholemeal bread with unsalted butter or philly cheese which he likes. It can end up in his nose, hair, eyes, ears, floor, etc (delete as appropriate) but he likes both. I don't like shop white bread so don't give it to him. Will have to try homemade bread.

Not sure on the nursery question - not one I thought of but i will have to check as DSs nursery what they do. He's fine with most food but if it needs a spoon like porridge or soup then he is spoon fed. If he has bread with the soup then he eats that himself. I just went with what Isaac wanted to do - and what he wanted to do was grab the food off our plates!

He's currently whizzing round the room in his walker while watching Handy Manny on the tv. He gets to watch it while I'm pumping and can't move to play with him too much.

You can give whatever bread you want! But keep in mind that what you start to give now will form their preferences down the line - so if you want them to prefer wholemeal bread in the future, then give it to them now :D. It IS healthier, but of course should be in line with what you buy anyway ;).

make it 3, nice to see you

as you've said lovely to have like minded mummies on here, but it's also nice to learn from others who have done things a bit differently too! my sister FF and doesn't use cloth nappies and is the best mum in the world, we're just all different with different priorities i guess!

nepthys - L eats porridge with his hands, i just make normal porridge with full cream milk, sometimes add some pear or banana or plums if there are any squishy ones needing using up, then i dollop it onto a board to cool a bit and he just eats it! love it!

giz - basically once they're months more or less anything goes...we started at 5.5 months as he was grabbing our food etc and i was so excited about starting having seen sir monster's t lol so i just stuck to veg at first but now the only thing i worry about is salt content. avoid whole nuts as they're a choking hazard and be sensible re choking hazards, e.g. i wouldn't give raw carrot sticks at the moment. as for bread L just has what we have which is hovis seed sensations, i bought the 5050 stuff at first but got sick of having 2 lots and he prefers this!

I have also thought about nursery/childminder, i think it's something I'll ask from the start, also with the nappies as even if they're included in the price I'd prefer cloth.

someone has just put a link to cheap itti bittis up...so tempted, could do with a couple of slimmer nappies for jeans days!!

alless - i agree re nappies, non of mine are new, we use a mix of tots bots bamboozle/cotton nippas, and mother ease one size/one life with motherease airflow wraps. i'm just buying some 2nd hand fleece wraps for nights, we're still in 'sposies at night but now he's not feeding at night he's weeing less so we can swap.

    where is pigpen?

well ds slept through again, yay, he's currently napping, literally sleeping across the v top of the cot! when he wakes he needs a feed then lunch and then we are setting off for this wedding service. better go and dig out a wedding card I guess.

I feel like such a fat ugly slob at the moment, my skin is bad, my gums are bleeding, my hair hasn't been cut for 6 months and i have no nice clothes that fit. Time to tackle it methinks!
