I think it's from birth. It's something to do with babies used to be put to sleep on their tummies so were used to being on their tummy, but now we have to put them on their backs, so they miss out on being on their tummy.

You sound like me! I've got boys who are 14 and 12 now, and a daughter who is 3. Things have changed between the 12 and 3 year old and sometimes I get confused even though she's my third one!

Keely - have you tried giving Elliot a clean dry cloth? Charlotte loves having her own cloth while I'm busy and she wipes things with it.

Went for coffee yesterday with my friend, and her youngest DD(2) and she was wiping a tiny patch of spilled milk on the table, completely disregarding the bits of chocolate muffin that were all over the place by this point and my friends coffee that the LO knocked and spilled most of :rotfl:

Hello :) Elliot is 2 1/2 years old now, and I was just wondering what other people's toddlers are upto? We are due to see the HV again in about a month or so time about his speech, as he didn't want to talk to her at the 2 year review and I'm not sure if he's up to speed for his age. Although I've been reassured by friends and not to worry too much. I have noticed over the past couple of weeks that he can pronounce some words better ie he used to miss the 'k' off the end of park, dark etc but is now saying them properly. He also points out pictures in books and on tv more-without me asking him what they are. So i think he's come on a lot. The cutest word though is 'help!' when he drops a toy and its out of reach when in the car for example, or if he falls over and can't get his balance to get up!

We still have tantrums, but they are lasting less and less so that's good. He seems to react well when i give him a choice of 2 things, ie when we're out and he's walking, and starts playing up-i say to him walk or pushchair and he soon carries on walking and is well behaved.

Elliot is also obsessed with putting rubbish in the bin-bin, washing in the basket and washing up in the bowl :) He does help me quite a lot now around the house, even a bit of sweeping up with his toy brush and pan lol.

    Hope everyone is ok,

    keely.

Hi Keely, good to hear from you :) and good to hear that you are having less problems. I have no idea about speech, Erin's still not talking but the only time I worry about it is when I read others on the facebook group with babies younger than Erin that are saying much more - I just have to do my best to ignore them.

Beccles - Erin was a back crawler - she could get across the room on her back! I used to try to stop her because I was so annoyed about her loosing her hair from doing it.

I just watched the 23week thing and wish I hadn't, I was in tears after the first few minutes and just feel so lucky that I had a normal, easy pregnancy.

The first few minutes were traumatic but the rest was fabulous trying to justify not attempting to save these babies.. and one of the nurses and one of the consuants each having their own personal experience was a nice touch. My daughters cerebral palsy is about on a par with the consultants daughter, but the left side whereas hers is the right.. maybe a little less severe but she also has other issues. What they don't tell you is they are likely to also have trouble conceiving and carry a baby to term.. but she is 8 and we will cross that abyss when we hit it. Either way the job those people do is amazing and seeing those little scraps of life develop into people is a miracle in itself.

We'd have problems if we were in that position.. OH says let the baby go and I say save it.. you have to feel it has been given a fighting chance.

DS3 didn't say a word until he was 3.5 and DD4 didn't until she was 3... he ended up going for speech therapy as he has dyspraxia which affected his speech but she came home from a day at nursery and was singing and talking and reciting nursery rhymes... it was as though she had been sneakily practising for weeks and suddenly decided to share it with everyone.. I actually have her singing on video it is pretty amazing!

DGS as 2 in February and says maybe half a dozen words.. fish, daddy, spoon, please and not much else.. since he has been coming here 3-4 times a week his speech has come on in bounds.. loads of praise and encouragment and repetition.. which is basically the whole gist of speech therapy.. MAKE them talk don't give them what they want as which they want.. you want red or blue? keep it out of arms reach if they point ask again.. you want the red one? Can you say red? Red one! Here is the red one for you.. is the red one nice? I like the red one too... it feels REALLY boring like your brain will melt but it does work.

  • Hi Everyone :) I hope everyone is ok!

Very tired here - we are back with the 5:45 wake ups and I really need to go to bed eatlier to make up for it!

Keely it sounds like he is doing fine to me. DH always thiks other peoples kids "don't talki much" because he compares them to Izzy, but it is actually that she talks loads from what I can tell comparing her to her friends! Help sounds very cute. We get "Can't do it" and "I'm stuck" but no help yet.

I'm umming and ahing as to if I should take her to playgroup today - she has had a runny tummythis morning but doesn't seem to be feeling ill - I'm assuming it is maybe just teeth? But there are some tiny babies at playgroup and we don't want to make them poorly. But I want to go play! it is a dilema :rotfl:

Oh stairgates - we have one on our kitchen door too - it doesn't get closed very often, but it is useful when i need it.

    Morning

Speaking: I think Josh was pretty normal and just developed speech as you would expect.

James hardly said a word until he was 3. He used to just grunt and point or say one word things like "juice" when he wanted a drink. I think Josh spoke a lot for him as once Josh went to school, James suddenly started speaking in full sentences! He obviously had all the words in his head, but still don't know the real reason why he didn't speak properly until he was 3.

Charlotte was very early speaking and was speaking in full sentences by two and using complex words that you wouldn't expect a two year old to know.

They've all been treated the same with me talking to them lots and giving them running commentaries when I'm busy and things like that so it's weird that they all developed language so differently.

Although James was slow with speaking, he was walking by 9 months, climbed of his cot at 10 months, and at a year old he ignored the toddler soft play and was away on one of the huge frames climbing all over the place! Charlotte spoke early, but her motor skills were slow. She didn't sit up until about 10-11 months and didn't attempt to walk until she was 14 months.

Just trying to say they all get there in the end, so don't worry too much if they don't hit certain milestones when guidelines say they should. They may just be slower than others in that area. I would only worry if they go way past the expected guideline date and show no interest in learning that skill.

Hope you decide what to do ladybird. If there are no other symptoms like a temperature or something, I would just put it down to teething and go.

Charlotte was hangy with a cold. She was poorly and clingy last night and I thought I would keep her off nursery today, but she seems bright and cheerful this morning. My Mam's having her as I'm at work, so I'll tell her to make the decision at lunchtime as to if she's going or not.

Have a good day all xx
Here I go again on my own....
  • Ta Beccles... I think that is what I'm going to do. We couln't go last week, and I missed it :o. (Well I missed having a gossip with my friends!)

Have to chase an agency when they open... waiting for news and they aren't returning my calls. I'm asssuming if it was good news they would have been a bit more willing to speak to me, but you never know!

    Hello :hello:

Hope everyone is feeling OK today, I did read back but my baby brain has sadly erased all the information.

I do remember about Stairgates, I still had 2 up before squeak and my kids were 6 and 7 :o one on the itchen door and one at the top of the stairs, to keep them up there when they wake up at silly o clock. DD1 does know how to open it but I think having the barrier there is a psychological thing.

That and she's been sternly told that downstairs is out of bounds when grownups are asleep, and someone is always up by 8 so it's not like they spend the whole day up there, unless their room is a tip, they don't come down till it's tidy and if that means breakfast at 11am so be it ;) they're slowly realising it's better to just tidy it up first thing instead of standing there whining about it now!

I've just put the chicken casserole in the slow cooker, I'm going to enjoy it even if the twins dont. I expect DD1 will hoover it all up anyway lol.

Well I'm just going to hang some washing out then clear up the kitchen, so that I have a hassle free evening lol.

Love to everyone, lurkers and all

I don't have stairgates.. I'd rather teach the children where is 'out of bounds' or dangerous than have my doorways destroyed...

Hi all - I'm sneaking a morning on MSE today as technically it's a housework day as ds2 is at playgrp - hope everyone is ok and lo's too.

I've been desperately trying to think of bay boy names lately but not doing well. My oh wants horrible names because they are relations names and I want something out of the ordinary but not too way out there. I really liked the name Daniel but OH had a family member with that name who died young (under 1) so we can't really use that name - other than that I'm thinking of Lennon (big beatles fan lol) but feel it would prob be shortened to len and that I'd HATE lol.

    Hi SJP, welcome!!

Am I the only one who feels like going back to work has been MORE work then?? Lol...I hate rushing around to get ready in the mornings, rushing to CMs, rushing to get home, rushrushrush! No time to do housework, too tired in the evening to do anything, etc. Meh, I'm just not a career woman :p.

Not the only one - I felt like this too - like I was always trying to catch up with myself. Every activity was manic and as much as I loved working being a sahm mum is so much less stressful. I also found that I was so busy that I didn't even notice large things that really needed to be kept on top of and am still catching up in the house and garden now! I just didn't notice the general decay when I was never home lol.

Becles, she is just so funny in what she says.

Henry announced on Monday that he wanted a big boy pillow like Daddy's, so we bought him one yesterday and then he moaned when it was on his bed!!!

Hi Maz - Archie has had a big boy pillow now for ages but we've just come through a year of constant colds and they really helped him breathe so I think thats why he liked them. Other times he'll quite happily sleep on the flat without a pillow - however he likes to moan also - maybe its their age but he is rather contrary at the mo and it's VERY annoying.

Keeley - My ds1 (13) didn't really talk at at all until 2 1/2 and he is normal (developmentally) now so it may not be a problem just yet. Like Becles LO he was physically very active from 10 mths so maybe that is why. DS2 on the other hand was fluent at 2 !/2 and I though he was a genius until we went back to playgp after a 6 mth break to find they were mostly all talking to some extent so I've downgraded him to just quite bright really lol :D.
